Original Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson Writing New 'Power Rangers' Comic Book Series With Boom! Studios

Well, this certainly sounds like fun. Amy Jo Johnson, who played the original Pink Ranger Kimberly Hart for all but 8 episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, its movie, and the subsequent Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, has been announced to be writing a new Power Rangers comic book series with publisher Boom Studios, which has been publishing Power Rangers comics since 2016.
With a release planned for next year, Johnson is co-writing it with her boyfriend, director Matt Hotson. It’s an idea she came up with in the early stages of the pandemic and has been holding onto ever since. No plot details are known, but there seems to be some sort of retelling involved as she’s quoted as saying it would be “different” from the original, “in the sense that it’s my version”, she elaborates. After her departure from the series, she left the franchise behind for the most part, going on to be a series regular in Felicity and Flashpoint while starring in Susie Q and Perfect Body. She would pursue directing about a decade ago, when she also started making convention appearances. She’s also started directing television, with an episode of Superman & Lois.
Back in January, the Power Rangers 30th anniversary TV special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once And Always (premiering April 19) received a feature in Entertainment Weekly and had a featurette released, giving the mainstream casuals a first look that saw many notice Johnson’s absence. So she took to Twitter to respond “For the record I never said no…I just didn’t say yes to what was offered. But other fun stuff is in-store! Looking forward to watching my friends kick ass!” It’s clear that it was something like this she was referring to. She has since clarified that factors such as being out-of-practice in acting, her familial duties, and even the comic itself were too much to put down to do the reunion. She says about her comic “This is my thank you, this is my love letter to the fans” for supporting her through the different directions her life has taken.
