Amy Sedaris Hops Over To 'Oswald The Lucky Rabbit' Disney+ Series
The live-action/animated hybrid gets a rather unique comedic presences for the adults
With the kid leads cast for Disney+’s Oswald the Lucky Rabbit series, the next priority seems to be the adults. First up, comedian Amy Sedaris has joined the Jon Favreau-fronted live-action/animation hybrid.
Sedaris, lately seen guesting on Frasier, Doctor Odyssey, and Love, Death & Robots, is set to play the mother of The Penguin alum Ryder Allen’s character, Taylor, a cautious child who despite their trepidations in most aspects, avoids turning down his friends. They star alongside Ravi Cabot-Conyers as hardworking Jake, who has a big heart and Mykal-Michelle Harris as the artistic Jen, who is always ahead of the game. Sedaris will next be heard voicing Jaunty Smurf in this month’s Smurfs movie.
Oswalds Collide As Jon Favreau’s 'Oswald The Lucky Rabbit' Series Casts Three
Oswald is meeting Oswald, the Skeleton Crew is splintering further, and there is no Alice in the Palace. Jon Favreau, director of the 2016 Jungle Book remake and the 2019 Lion King remake with only animated elements to speak of, is making a live-action/animated hybrid
She is probably best known for starring in and co-creating the cult hit comedy Strangers with Candy for Comedy Central. Her subsequent starring TV credits include voicing Princess Carolyn on Netflix’s Bojack Horseman and creating truTV’s At Home with Amy Sedaris which she was also writer and executive producer for, ending up a pandemic casualty after garnering two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series. Her other film roles include Jennifer’s Body, Puss in Boots, The Boss Baby: Family Business, Shrek the Third and Chicken Little. It’s also worth noting that Sedaris and Favreau, who is writer, director and producer on the Oswald series, have worked together quite a bit. After playing a secretary in 2003’s Elf, she appeared in 2014’s Chef, which Favreau starred in, wrote and directed. Sedaris subsequently voiced a Guinea Fowl in Favreau’s 2019 remake of The Lion King, and played Peli Motto in his Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.
Oswald was Disney’s first animated star, the predecessor to Mickey Mouse. He starred in 27 theatrical animated shorts produced by them between 1927 and 1928, before Walt refused to settle for a 20% share, lost the rights, and went on to create Mickey and his eventual friends. After nearly 80 years, with only the first 10 in active production, Disney reacquired the rights to Oswald from NBCUniversal in 2006. In exchange, Al Michaels was allowed to move to NBC’s Sunday Night Football, as in the following season, Monday Night Football was moving from ABC to ESPN with a new broadcast team. Michaels would spend 15 seasons at NBC before moving over to Amazon Prime Video’s Thursday Night Football telecasts. Aside from a prominent co-starting role in the Epic Mickey video games, merchandise and parks presence, Oswald in film and TV was relegated to cameos in shorts like Get A Horse! or the Mickey Mouse series run by Paul Rudish. There was an Oswald animated series developed for Disney+ and showrun by Matt Danner of the Muppet Babies reboot and The Legend of the Three Caballeros but was canceled seemingly before the streamer even launched. In December 2022, the company released the first Oswald short since losing him, and is the most recent project to star him until this series. It was directed by beloved animator Eric Goldberg.
As for Harris, after posting about her casting in the series on Instagram, she followed that up by confirming the fate of her Raven’s Home spinoff pilot. Alice in the Palace, where she would have continued in the role of Alice Baxter would not be picked up to series. In her words, “Everyone has been asking soooo…I want to say thank you so very much to EVERY SINGLE PERSON (cast imogen_cohen connorcruzstoutactor dlbaze_theactorofficial Mr matherpzickel…who worked on my very own pilot that I not only played the titular character on… but also played opposite myself as another character (Alice and Clementine) AND was a PRODUCER on. It was for sure a dream come true to make #AliceInThePalace. Ultimately, #disneychannel decided to take the strategy in a different direction that did not include our show. #thatsTheBusiness. But I am so blessed to have accomplished this. To my new family that served as the lead cast…LOVE U FOREVER. To every member of the crew and production office… you were amazing !!!”
