Animated 'Ghostbusters' Movie In The Works For Netflix
Sony Pictures is doubling down on animated projects for the 40-year-old supernatural franchise and the streamer
It’s official: Sony Pictures Animation is very interested in bringing the Ghostbusters franchise back to animation. Already working on the first animated series for the franchise since Extreme Ghostbusters, the companies are also working on an animated film that is in early development. Ghost Corps isn’t stated to directly be involved yet, but Kris Pearn is attached to direct. It'll be headed to the same place as the animated series, Netflix.
The fact that this animated film is stated to be in early development with no plot details revealed means this cannot be the yet-unrevealed story from the perspective of the ghost that was first announced in 2015 (by the since-deceased original director and Jason’s father Ivan Reitman) and last confirmed in June 2022 with Jennifer Kluska and Chris Prynoski as directors and Brenda Hsueh as writer.
Pearn, has history with both Sony Animation and Netflix. He directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 for the former with Cody Cameron in what was their first film as directors for both of them. They took over from the initially-returning Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Pearn also directed The Willoughbys for Netflix, a film he developed the story, and co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Stanleigh. Pearn was in fact the one who secured the streamer’s distribution.
This new Ghostbusters animated film shows that the studio and the streamer will keep their (non-exclusive, obviously) distribution partnership. Even the public at large never expected it to go beyond, in strictly a film sense, the three released in 2021 in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Mitchells vs. the Machines, Wish Dragon, and Vivo, but it will when K-Pop: Demon Hunters, directed by first-timer Maggie Kang releases on the streamer in the new year.
