Licensed video games are back! And so is chibi-style Avatar shorts!
If you love Avatar: The Last Airbender and fighting games, with a vague memory of shorts in a chibi style from the DVDs, then the franchise’s New York Comic Con edition of the 20th anniversary panel is for you. Indeed, the panel for the beloved Nickelodeon franchise happened Sunday, on a weekend that was at one point set to see the release of the animated feature film that would become known as The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender that is now set for October 9, 2026, ie the same weekend next year. Original cast members Zach Tyler Eisen, Jack De Sena, Michaela Jill Murphy, Dante Basco, and Mae Whitman, the voices of Aang, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, and Katara, co-creator Bryan Konietzko and moderator Janet Varney, the voice of sequel series protagonist Korra did not bring a first clip or still of the movie to mark the occasion, but did announce a new 1v1 fighting game that is currently being developed under the working title Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game. It is set to release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam in summer 2026.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game as it is currently known is by Gameplay Group International. Founded relatively recently, they usually serve to revive cancelled games. It’s unclear where this particular game, which carries the franchise’s artstyle, stands however. Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko, Azula, Toph and Korra are seven of the twelve player characters that will be available at launch, with more coming through seasonal updates. There will be an original single player campaign and combo trials. The trailer sees Aang and Korra enter the Avatar State separately, with the former primarily airbending and the latter using all elements for her bending. Zuko firebends and separately from that dons his Blue Spirit mask and swords. The Steam description promises that it “channels the energy of classic fighting games while breaking new ground in movement, style, and combat expression. Built with a focus on fluidity, responsiveness, and online integrity, the game invites players to discover what it truly means to fight with purpose”.

Chibi-Minis is a new animated webseries that brings the show back to the style previously used in what was known as the “Super Deformed Shorts”, which were included on home media releases of the original series. Here, Aang, Katara, Zuko, Toph, Sokka, and everyone else are reimagined as pint-sized powerhouses with “big personalities” and “even bigger elemental moves”! Whether it’s mastering mini-water whips or unleashing tiny fireballs, these chibi benders are here to prove that size doesn’t matter when it comes to saving the world. While original stories will be here as well, reimaginings of original series episodes and the comics that came after will also be part of things. And where better to start than with the first episode “The Boy in the Iceberg”? YouTube will be the primary home, as demonstrated with “Otter-Penguin Racing!” being available right now.
This Avatar franchise returns to standard-length animated series with one subtitled Seven Havens, which also brings back linear-first Nickelodeon premieres for the first time since Korra season 3. It premieres next year.
