'Bluey: The Movie' Officially Announced For 2027 Release
The film will be released theatrically and make Disney+ its streaming home, already shifting the priorities of the series creator
When you’re the biggest preschool show in the world, there’s certainly a way to go bigger. A Bluey feature film has been announced by BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company. And yes, it’s wholly animated, but will be CG.
The film will premiere in theaters globally in 2027, with a streaming home on Disney+, also airing on ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia after the theatrical release. It will be written and directed by series creator Joe Brumm, done as a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios. The series voice cast will reprise their roles, including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, while series composer Joff Bush will once again provide the music. The film will be produced by Animal Logic alum Amber Naismith, who has credits on Happy Feet, The Lego Movie, and The Lego Batman Movie. Richard Jeffery, who was part of the show for its first three series is returning to co-direct. Brumm also executive produces alongside Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson from Ludo Studio, and Justine Flynn for BBC Studios.
“Since its debut on Disney Jr. and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families everywhere with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination and connection,” said Disney Entertainment co-chairpeople Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, in a statement. “We are so proud to expand upon our relationship with BBC Studios to bring the magic of Bluey to the big screen – for real life! – and we are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere.”
Brumm said “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on “The Sign” in series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen.” Pearson and Aspinwall remarked “Over the past eight years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team of more than fifty artists and producers whose talent, dedication, and creativity have shaped Bluey into the beloved series it is today. Their work has paved the way for this incredible opportunity to expand Bluey’s world onto the big screen. We’re excited to continue showing Queensland as a home for world-class talent and to share a new beautiful ‘Bluey’ story by Joe Brumm with families around the world.”
Brumm also wrote a separate letter, explaining the ramifications of making the movie, namely that he’s stepping away from the series in order to focus all of his energy on it. As he continued “Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically. My Bluey crew and all the creative people in my life completely understand my decision. Working with that wonderful group of people has been the absolute highlight of my animation career and I hope Bluey on their CV is a badge of pride for them. To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film. Thank you for taking this show into your homes, the whole experience has been an impossible experience to describe.”
Promising to deliver “the same charm and humor that made the television series a global phenomenon”, the movie will continue the adventures of Bluey, the lovable, inexhaustible, blue heeler dog, who lives with her Mum, Dad and little sister Bingo. Bluey is 2024’s most-watched series globally on Disney+, and through November the year’s #1 most-watched series on streaming to date among total viewers in the United States, with more than 50.5 billion minutes watched, amounting to 842 million hours.
