'Common Side Effects' Renewed For Season 2 At Adult Swim
The renewal announcement comes ahead of Sunday’s season finale
Adult Swim’s got some magic mushrooms, and they’re not going anywhere. The network has renewed Common Side Effects for a second season ahead of Sunday’s first season finale. The prescription has been refilled.
Produced by Bandera Entertainment and Green Street Pictures from from co-creators Joe Bennett and Steve Hely and executive producers Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, the half-hour series follows Marshall Cuso, voiced by Dave King, and Frances Applewhite, voiced by Emily Pendergast, two former high school lab partners who share a secret: Marshall has discovered the world’s greatest medicine, a mushroom that can heal most anything. Getting it out into the world won’t be easy, as the DEA, big pharma, and international businessmen are all in pursuit to stop them. Heading into Sunday’s finale, Marshall has head his head bashed in at the bottom of a cliff he was pushed off by Hildy, voiced by Sue Rose, who Marshall healed earlier in the season and has since gone rogue, chasing profit. The series also stars Joseph Lee Anderson and Martha Kelly.
Adult Swim Makes Shroom To Heal With 'Common Side Effects' Trailer, Premiere Date
Adult Swim is getting extra pharmaceutical. Fresh off the season finale of Invincible Fight Girl, the network has prepped its next new series Common Side Effects. Created by Scavengers Reign creator Joe Bennett and Steve Hely and executive produced by
“Joe and Steve did their job by crafting a boundary-pushing and genre-defining piece of television that re-frames what ‘adult animation’ is capable of,” said Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen. “And you all did your job by showing up on Adult Swim and Max to support the show and lighting up your socials to spread the word. So, see? We CAN have nice things.”
For most of March, Common Side Effects in its Sunday 11:30 PM slot has led off back-to-back-to-back premieres with YOLO: Rainbow Trinity and Oh My God… Yes!, being typical Adult Swim quarter-hour shows that follow it in the midnight slot. It is easily the most-packed consistent premiere lineup in all of cable for quite a while now, even just by quantity. The series was also bizarrely given the 12:30 AM slot on Toonami, Adult Swim’s action and anime block, back on March 1.
“We are grateful for the enthusiastic response to Common Side Effects and are thrilled to continue exploring this world with our amazing team and the fans who have embraced the show,” said co-creators Bennett and Hely. “The opportunity to push the boundaries of animation and storytelling on Adult Swim is like a wonderful mushroom dream. Our goal with the show is to transform planet Earth and restore the human spirit. For now, we will settle for a second season.”
