David Krumholtz And Emily Beecham Are Kara’s Parents In 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow'
They don’t have long for the DC Universe, but they’re still in it
It was just about 50 weeks ago that House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock won the role of Kara Zor-El, Supergirl in DC Studios’s new DC Universe. She’s expected to cameo in this July’s Superman film starring David Corenswet and directed by James Gunn before headlining Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in its own 50 weeks from Superman on June 26, 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie. This near-year later, we now know who’s playing Kara’s parents, and it’s British actress Emily Beecham and The Santa Clause franchise and Oppenheimer actor David Krumholtz.
If we are to assume faithfulness to the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic book miniseries of the same name it’s inspired by, Beecham will play Alura In-Ze and Krumholtz will play Zor-El. There’s no reason to believe Ana Nogueira’s script has changed their names as shooting began this week in DC’s British production hub in Leavesden. However, there’s also the question of screentime, considering Gunn, who is also DC Studios co-CEO, described the film in the original slate reveal at the end of January 2022 thusly: “"We see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl… she's not exactly the Supergirl we're used to seeing." So yeah if they’re going to be dead that doesn’t lend to much screentime.
Keep Calm, Kara’s On: Milly Alcock Is Supergirl In The New DC Universe
Nevertheless, she persisted. And Milly Alcock won. The House of the Dragon star has won the highly coveted role of Kara Zor-El, Supergirl, in DC Studios’s new DC Universe across film and television, as constructed by CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
This Kara, hardened from having to survive solely on the remains of the destroyed Krypton is enlisted by a noble and honorable alien warrior named Ruthye Marye Knoll. Played by Eve Ridley, Knoll is hunting down Krem of the Yellow Hill, played by Matthias Schoenerts, across the galaxy after he killed her father. It’s a situation where Kara isn’t going to settle and build a fortress where she can have her parents appear by hologram. It’s not clear why The Hollywood Reporter, who got the exclusive, started doubting it would be a proper adaptation, but it at least doesn’t seem to fall on Jason Momoa appearing as Lobo, which is described as a cameo.
In the 1984 Supergirl film starring Helen Slater and directed by the recently-deceased Jeannot Szwarc, Zor-El and Alura were played by Simon Ward and Mia Farrow. The Arrowverse Supergirl series saw neither character keeping their original actor, being Robert Gant and Laura Benanti in the first two seasons but Erica Durance as Alura in the third and fifth and Jason Behr as Zor-El in the sixth.
Krumholtz started acting as a child, with his first three film credits being Life with Mikey with Christina Vidal and Michael J. Fox, Addams Family Values, and as fan favorite elf Bernard in The Santa Clause, a role he reprised for the second film, but infamously not the third, something addressed when he returned for an episode of the The Santa Clauses Disney+ series. He also appeared in 10 Things I Hate About You, the Harold & Kumar trilogy, Superbad and Sausage Party, returning for its Foodtopia Prime Video series. On television he’s probably best known for starring as Charlie Eppes on the CBS drama Numbers. There’s also the whole pedigree bump he got as Isidor Isaac Rabi in the highly-lauded ensemble of Oppenheimer. Beecham may be best known for starring in the mind-bending Netflix series 1899. She also appeared in the Guy Ritchie thriller The Covenant starring Jake Gyllenhaal and co-stars in the newest film rendition of William Tell with Jonathan Pryce, Ben Kingsley, and Jonah Hauer-King.
Gunn welcomed both to the DCU in his Instagram stories, remarking that Beecham’s right ear is indeed normal-sized. Krumholtz posted to his Instagram knowing the childhood dream he’s about to live out “I was that kid. Overflowing drawers full of comics… escaping into worlds unknown… imagining myself having powers that would benefit the greater good. Joining the DC Universe is a mindblowing privilege. Representing the symbol of hope in Supergirl as Zor-El is a personal triumph. My gratitude overflowing now, like those drawers did….”. He included comic art of the family, their horse, and Argo City.
