'Doctor Who' Adds 'RuPaul's Drag Race' Star Jinkx Monsoon
Allons-ay away into the TARDIS for Series 14
Actress, singer and two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race winner, Jinkx Monsoon has been cast in a major role in the upcoming fourteenth series of Doctor Who.
Monsoon not only won the fifth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2013 but won the seventh and most recent season of its All-Stars edition, which aired last year. They just wrapped an 8-week run as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton in Chicago on Broadway, the first drag queen to play the role. With the news, Monsoon was celebratory, stating “I’m honoured, thrilled, and utterly excited to join Doctor Who! Russell T Davies is a visionary and a brilliant writer— I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew! I hope there’s room in the TARDIS for my luggage.” Davies, returning for a second stint as showrunner having overseen the tenures of the Ninth and Tenth Doctors, shepherding the series’s revival, welcomed her gracefully, declaring “In a galaxy of comets and supernovas, here comes the biggest star of all. Jinkx Monsoon is on a collision course with the TARDIS, and Doctor Who will never be the same again!”
Series 14 is set to be the first full series to star the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, and his companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson. Aneurin Barnard, Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge are also already confirmed to be cast, while Jemma Redgrave will be returning as Kate Stewart. Before it airs next year, there are still three 60th anniversary specials with David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor, after which he will regenerate into Gatwa, whose first adventure will be a Christmas special. All of this will air on Disney+ internationally, including the United States, remaining on the BBC domestically.
