'Doctor Who: Unleashed' Special For Revival’s 20th Anniversary Gets Date, More Guests
The girl who waited and the lone Centurion return once more to be interviewed
After “The Reality War” finishes the current season of Doctor Who this Saturday and has its own edition of behind-the-scenes series Doctor Who: Unleashed. Recently it was announced that Unleashed would have a double-length special that celebrates 20 years since Doctor Who’s 2005 revival, and now we know it won’t be airing too alone. The BBC has confirmed that the episode will be released on June 7, the week after the season ends.
However, there’s more to it. Without an attached episode, it’s functioning much more independently. The iPlayer release is at 6 AM while it will be airing twice on the BBC’s family of channels. The premiere will actually be on BBC One at 6:20 PM, followed by the BBC Three airing at 7 PM. An international YouTube release is expected, but not detailed so it’s unclear what part of the rollout it will be following.
But that’s not all! Two more guests have been added: Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, who played Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith’s companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams over the course of series 5, 6, and about half of seven. Following their tear jerking departures in “The Angels Take Manhattan”, Gillan made one more onscreen appearance, hallucinated by Eleven during his regeneration in “Time of the Doctor”, before starring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Nebula, as well as the Jumanji movies. Recently, she’s starred in the series Douglas Is Cancelled, reuniting her with onscreen daughter Alex Kingston, and the Mike Flanagan-directed Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck, starring Tom Hiddleston, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jacob Tremblay, and Mark Hamill. Darvill went onto Broadchurch and as rogue Time Master Rip Hunter on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. They both reprised their roles in “Rory’s Story”, the first in a line of pandemic-era online shorts called Doctor Who Lockdown. In 1946 New York, the pair await the homecoming of their adopted infant son Anthony, and Rory records on his smartphone for him their stories of adventure and romance.
'Doctor Who' Celebrates Revival’s 20th Anniversary With Special 'Unleashed' Episode
In an 8-episode second season of Doctor Who on Disney+ that sought to bring Belinda Chandra home, and having just had three 60th anniversary specials just a year and a half ago, it would be a lot to fit in another anniversary special for the 20th anniversary of the show’s revival. March 26, 2005 was the night it all kicked off with the premiere of “Rose…
They join a roster of interviewees for host Steffan Powell that includes Doctors David Tennant (Darvill’s Broadchurch co-star), Jodie Whittaker, and hopefully still-incumbent Ncuti Gatwa, companions Billie Piper, Pearl Mackie, Mandip Gill, and Varada Sethu, and all three showrunners the revival has had: Russell T. Davies, Steven Moffat (who was their showrunner during their tenure and created Douglas Is Cancelled) and Chris Chibnall, who Darvill also worked with on Broadchurch. What other crew Powell will be gleaning whatever new secrets he can has not been confirmed yet.
At the special’s announcement, Davies, the revival’s current and original showrunner remarked: “After the season's climactic end, it’s great to celebrate the 20 years that led us here. I hope this is a party for faithful viewers, with a galaxy of stars, Doctors, companions, Billie Piper reunited with David Tennant, and the making of our first ever Dalek!” Powell added “What a joy to be giving the Unleashed treatment to 20 years’ worth of Doctor Who history. To see the lasting impact the show has had on those who helped bring the magic to screen has been a privilege, and a reminder of just how much the show means to so many.”
