The CinemaCon Trailer For DC Studios's 'The Flash' Puts Heavy Emphasis On Batman
Yeah, it's a bit nuts
Tuesday was Warner Bros.’s presentation day at CinemaCon. Not only that, but their presentation time was apparently moved up several hours earlier than reported. Warner Bros. Discovery boss doubled down on ending Max original films, but there were first looks at and trailers for Furiosa, Wonka, Meg 2: The Trench, The Nun 2, Dune 2, and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom were shown. But the only new trailer from them allowed to go public was The Flash.
This is the embattled film’s second trailer, having been faced with COVID-related delays and star Ezra Miller’s building criminal record that has sidelined him from the marketing. It follows the first trailer released for February’s Super Bowl LVII. It starts with Michael Keaton’s Bruce telling Barry (Miller) about how much self-restraint he needed to properly cope with his parents’ deaths and other past mistakes, forming who he became along the way only for Barry to go back in time to save his mother from her murder in turn saving his father, essentially succeeding before consequentially “destroying the world”.
What follows is some of what was already in the first trailer, his arrival in the past, the nostalgic shot of the house, the memories of his mother and her murder, the travel back, the invasion of Zod in the changed timeline. Some new footage includes an exchange where Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle, asks if the Barrys know what the Crest of the House of El signifies, another hope talk. We get a “You wanna get nuts? Let’s get nuts.” because apparently that’s the only other line besides “I’m Batman” worth a damn from his films. The Affleck Batman scenes are back again. Supergirl flies Barry high in the stormy sky, implying this is how he might be electrocuted to restart his powers, but there’s also a machine doing it. In fact, a lot of the action climax seems to be shown here, as Barry convinces Barry that they can’t let anyone die. At least the trailer ends on a cute showcase of Keaton Batman’s Batwings on his suit as they’re dropped from the Batplane.
The Flash releases in theaters on June 16, though the film did premiere at CinemaCon following the presentation Wednesday, so many attendees were able to share non-spoiler thoughts on their socials. So it’s still going to be until then before we find out what the ramifications that form the new DC Universe will be, and see whether David Zaslav and James Gunn’s insistence on its greatness is real.
