Paramount+'s 'Bass Reeves' Adds Garrett Hedlund And Shea Whigham
Garrett Hedlund and Shea Whigham have been cast in an upcoming series about legendary lawman Bass Reeves coming to Paramount+ from Yellowstone franchise creator Taylor Sheridan. Hedlund will be playing Garrett Montgomery, a so-called "posse man" of the era who Bass hires for his riding knowledge and his even greater knowledge of the area. Whigham will play Col. George Reeves, Bass's “upright and incredibly cruel master".
The series stars lead and executive producer David Oyelowo, Lauren E. Banks, Forrest Goodluck, Demi Singleton and Barry Pepper. Hedlund and Whigham’s characters are recurring guest roles, alongside Dennis Quaid and Grantham Coleman. It is currently filming in Texas. Bass Reeves was a real person who worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory. He is said to have captured more than 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded, and for it he is considered the greatest frontier hero in American history.
Whigham currently appears in HBO’s Perry Mason, and will next be seen in Showtime's Waco followup series Waco: The Aftermath, premiering in April and reprising the role of Mitch Decker. His other previous television credits include Boardwalk Empire, the first season of True Detective, the third season of Fargo, Vice Principals, Justified, Agent Carter and Narcos. He also appeared as G. Gordon Liddy in the limited series Gaslit. In film, he's been Agent Michael Stasiak in three Fast & Furious movies, most recently F9. He also appeared in The Lincoln Lawyer, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, First Man and Joker. He is set to voice George Stacy in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and appear in both parts of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning.
Hedlund is already starring on the platform’s series Tulsa King, meaning he got to the platform before his Eragon co-star Ed Speleers, currently appearing as Jack Crusher in the final season of Star Trek: Picard. Hedlund;s next film, The Tutor, releases on March 24, but he might be most familiar to audiences for his roles, aside from Eragon, in the original Friday Night Lights, Inside Llewyn Davis. and Tron: Legacy. He recently finished filming Desperation Road and The Marsh King’s Daughter, the latter co-starring Ben Mendelson and Daisy Ridley.
