It’s All A Game For Kahhori and Byrdie In Penultimate 'What If…?' Preview Clip
We’re taking a first glimpse at the endgame now for the Marvel Animation series
Every day this week since Saturday, December 21, Marvel Studios has released a preview clip for the next day’s episode of its Disney+ animated series What If…? At first it’s to an outlet before it’s posted to their YouTube channel. While obviously I’m not positioned to be a direct recipient, I have failed to produce a corresponding for article for all six before the release of the episode, which started with a second clip from the season premiere. But now we’re in the two-part series finale stage that starts with the seventh episode “What If…The Watcher Disappeared?”, so it’s about time that changed.
After breaking his oath twice in the last two episodes, intervening by motivating Riri Williams against Mysterio on the post-Emergence Earth and helping Jun-Fan escape immigrant brainwashed and torturer Sonny Burch in 1872, Uatu was expelled from his observation plane by Watchers named the Eminence, the Incarnate, and the Executioner, voiced by Jason Isaacs, D. C. Douglas, and Darin De Paul. The shards that broke were lingered on for a reason. "We are looking at broken pieces of the fifth dimension itself," Captain Carter observes, making her sole story appearance this season as the series that began with her heads to its close. Once again voiced by Hayley Atwell, she remarks that this has happened before, specifically "Infinity Ultron blasted through the observational plane and nearly destroyed all of existence," Storm says. This variant of the beloved mutant and member of the X-Men is the Mjolnir-wielding Goddess of Thunder. She is still voiced by Alison Sealy-Smith, her voice actress for X-Men ‘97 and first playing the role in the original Fox Kids animated series.
Meanwhile, Kahhori is playing a foosball table decorated by Marvel characters. With comic-accurate designs like Thanos, Luke Cage/Power Man, Iron Fist, Kang the Conqueror, Scarlet Witch, Invisible Woman Sue Storm, Doctor Doom, Magneto, Rogue, She-Hulk, Iron Man, Wolverine, and Beta Ray Bill, with goalies Galactus and Captain America Steve Rogers. Her opponent? Byrdie, who has been revealed to be the daughter of the Howard the Duck and Darcy Lewis met in “What If... Thor Were an Only Child?”, born over the course of the “What If…Howard the Duck Got Hitched?” episode, and powered by the Convergence. Bearing an adult appearance, it’s not yet revealed as of writing whether this is a variant pulled from adulthood, whether she is a complete adult in physical and mental aspects, or whether it’s something about the physiology brought on by her father’s species (faster physical development than a normal human). As previously reported, she’s voiced by Natasha Lyonne.
Marvel’s Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum has told that the series will end in a "very bittersweet" and "melancholy" way. "For now it is, I think, a beautiful way to end this era and to culminate the story of the Watcher. The ending is both happy and sad." What If…? ends Sunday, December 29 on Disney+ with “What If…What If?”, completing a three-season, 26 episode run.
