J. Alphonse Nicholson Latest To Join HBO And DC Studios’s 'Lanterns'
Daddy’s gone. Not going home, ever again?
Daddy’s coming home to Lanterns. Or at least he used to. J. Alphonse Nicholson has been cast on HBO and DC Studios’s series starring Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan, set in the new DC Universe. Nicholson is set to recur as young John Stewart Sr., the father of the former who will be played by Aaron Pierre.
Why is he playing the character’s young self? Because from all indications in some light research, he’s a deadbeat who abandoned his son and…presumed wife Bernadette sometime in younger John’s childhood and scarcely gets mentioned. Sounds like there’s going to be a lot of flashbacks to childhood and those days before he left. The report of Nicholson’s casting did not come with a character description like Bernadette got with Nicole Ari Parker’s casting, and certainly reinforces that the relationships are going to play out in this adaptation. As a reminder, her description reads “Formidable and tenacious, Bernadette refuses to give up, no matter how insurmountable the odds. At her core, she’s a fiercely protective mother who has worked her entire life to ensure that she and her family will not be passed over.” In main continuity, John’s parents are named Henry and Shirley.
Nicole Ari Parker Joins HBO, DC Studios’s 'Lanterns' As John Stewart’s Mom
And just like that, HBO and DC Studios’s Green Lantern series Lanterns has brought mama into the picture. The series, in production since the end of February, has set has cast Nicole Ari Parker in the recurring role of Bernadette, John Stewart’s mother.
Nicholson is probably best known for his series regular role as Lil’ Murda on Starz’s P-Valley. His other television credits include FX’s Clipped and Netflix’s Self Made miniseries with Octavia Spencer, while his film roles include Hulu’s White Men Can’t Jump remake, as well as Just Mercy and They Cloned Tyrone. He also has Broadway experience, featured in A Soldier’s Play, which won the Tony for Best Revival of a Play.
Pierre’s Stewart Jr. is the new recruit being paired with Lantern legend Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, together described as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Kelly Macdonald plays Hal’s reported love interest, Sheriff Kerry, who seems to be pursued over the course of the season, Garret Dillahunt plays “modern cowboy” William Macon, Jason Ritter as his son Billy Macon, Poorna Jagannathan plays Zoe, John’s reported love interest, and Ulrich Thomsen plays the villain Sinestro. Showrunner Chris Mundy, previously of Ozark, and co-writers and executive producers Lindelof and Tom King all developed the show. James Hawes directs the first two episodes and also executive produces with Ron Schmidt. The other directors are Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov, while the costume designer is Cynthia Ann Summers. Lanterns premieres in early 2026 on HBO.
Colin Farrell Might Be Going From Mob Wars To Infantry As Sgt. Rock
Of course it had to be St. Patrick’s Day to get casting news involving an Irish actor. Awards season is over. The Batman Part II still doesn’t have a finished script. That doesn’t matter to Colin Farrell, because it seems he’s willing to stay in the realm of
