James Gunn Has Picked Himself To Direct 'Superman: Legacy'
The DC Studios CEO is taking matters into his own hands, kicking off the new DC Universe by directing his own script
In what seems like the most logical conclusion, James Gunn has hired himself to be the director of Superman: Legacy.
Named co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios with partner Peter Safran in late October with duties beginning days later at the turn of the month, such position did not preclude the acclaimed writer and director from doing those things even as a leader of the regime. And indeed, Safran will be producing, as the goal has been for them to be executives and producers. By mid-December, it was reported that Gunn was writing a Superman movie, which was announced to be Superman: Legacy, the film to kick off the “Gods & Monsters” chapter kicking off the new DC Universe, at the end of January.
The film is set for a July 11, 2025 release, as was announced in January and it turns out it had significance that completely slipped Gunn’s mind. His brother Matt had to remind him it was their father’s birthday. In confirming the directing news, Gunn recalled how his dad, who died three years ago, was his best friend. “He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him.” Gunn also revealed he was offered Superman years ago, but declined at the time because he “didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved.” However, inspiration struck to angle it about his Kryptonian heritage and Earth upbringing. And of course, just because one writes something doesn’t mean they feel they’re fit to direct such potentially complex script for such a large-scale project, but Gunn eventually did find himself up to the task of truth, justice, and the American way.
