James Gunn Is Bringing DC Its First Solo 'Wonder Woman' Animated Series
The Lasso of Truth has been cast and activated.
In over 80 years since her debut, and 70 years since the first television series based on a DC publication, Wonder Woman has never had an animated series, even 55 years since those became a part of things. But as of Saturday, March 11, that seems to be changing.
It took a call out from Twitter user Sennaverse, who wrote “Diana is a character with such a rich cast with so much untapped potential and stories, it’s beyond past time for it to be explored. #WonderWomanAnimatedSeries”. Somehow, this caught the attention of DC Studios co-CEO and acclaimed director James Gunn, who agreed, saying he was “working on it”.
Wonder Woman never got her own solo series, and with both Batman and Superman getting new solo series, Batman Caped Crusader and My Adventures with Superman, respectively, her not getting one was starting to stick out sorely for many. Superman himself hadn’t had a solo animated series since his DCAU series ended over 20 years ago. Caped Crusader was just picked up by Prime Video after being dropped by HBO Max, while the latter is still set for HBO Max and Cartoon Network.
There was a time where rights issues even precluded Wonder Woman’s arrival in the DC Animated Universe, arguably her most famous animated iteration, if overall. Supposedly, further rights issues prevented the same iteration from appearing on Batman Beyond, forcing them to use Barda, the Static Shock crossovers, and even The Batman, whose fifth season features a Justice League wholly lacking in female members. Something about not being able to guest star and only star? Apparently, this was all resolved in time for Batman: The Brave and the Bold, presumably leading the way to the character’s Scooby-Doo and Guess Who! appearance, while her lead ensemble work continued in series Justice League Action and DC Superhero Girls. Even still, Gunn agreed that wasn’t enough of her in animated television, as he explained to another Twitter user. As it turns out, this was one of the first things he brought up to the people in the department.
It’s good to see the Themysciran princess get her due. And the broader rogues get theirs too. after being sidelined even moreso in favor of Diana’s allies’ own villains. Even as it makes for another Elseworld, this will probably be a time for the character’s isolation to be beneficial for once.
