Jon Bernthal Will Reprise His Role As The Punisher In 'Daredevil: Born Again' For Disney+
The Angel of Death may be returning, but who has grimmer chances?
It’s official! Jon Bernthal has made the trek. He will reprise his role as Frank Castle, The Punisher, in Marvel Studios’s Daredevil revival series Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+.
Bernthal, who confirmed his return by posting a captionless screenshot on Instagram, is the third actor confirmed to return in their role from Marvel’s previous MCU-related series that first aired on Netflix from 2015-2019. The first two, Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin, are of course reprising their roles in the new series, but also have already been introduced and incorporated through appearances in the films and better-tied series. Cox as Murdock appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and D’Onofrio as Kingpin appeared in Hawkeye. They’re also both set to appear in another upcoming Disney+ series, Echo, which is supposed to lead into the events of Born Again.
While Bernthal’s portrayal did debut in the second season of the first Daredevil series and was a series regular for it, he did get his own starring spinoff for two seasons. This makes him the first starring actor outside of Daredevil from that slate to be part of the MCU. However, it’s looking more and more likely that Murdock has found himself in a new situation that has left him separated from colleagues Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, played by Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson. Neither actor is on the roll call for Born Again, so the characters may not play a part in the story, or in the lesser-preferred situation, could be recast.
The first Daredevil series did get a third season but was canceled after, as were all of Netflix’s Marvel shows, the others being Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and the middling Iron Fist as Disney began building toward Disney+. This put character usage in limbo that the Kingpin and Daredevil appearances finally crawled them out of. Daredevil: Born Again will be written by Matt Corman and Chris Ord with a first season running 18 episodes, a number so uncommon in streaming that animated series with bigger counts get theirs broken up into multiple seasons of smaller batches. It is still pegged to premiere in the spring of next year.
