'Lanterns' Casts Sherman Augustus As Present Day John Stewart Sr.
Welp, there goes all my assumptions. I think it’ll be cool to give John’s parents depth
Alright, two thoughts. First, why couldn’t this be revealed first? And second, I couldn’t be happier to be wrong. Just a day after it was reported that J. Alphonse Nicholson was playing younger John Sr. on HBO and DC Studios’s Green Lantern series Lanterns, it has been uncovered that fellow P-Valley alum Sherman Augustus will be playing John Sr. in present day.
While John’s father is a deadbeat who abandoned his wife and son in the comics, it seems this series will try to bring character depth to him in a way that also keeps him around, mostly because those inclinations of his comics self are absent. His character description says he’s now “the human embodiment of ‘stubborn’. In his own reality, he tends to fixate on the past and what could have been.” If he wasn’t around, it would touch on that, and not have as great a gauge on his current character as it does. In main comics continuity, John’s parents are named Henry and Shirley.
J. Alphonse Nicholson Latest To Join HBO And DC Studios’s 'Lanterns'
Daddy’s coming home to Lanterns. Or at least he used to. J. Alphonse Nicholson has been cast on HBO and DC Studios’s series starring Green Lanterns John Stewart and Hal Jordan, set in the new DC Universe. Nicholson is set to recur as young John Stewart Sr., the father of the former who will be played by Aaron Pierre.
Augustus might be best known for recurring as Lt. Colonel Jack Sullivan on the most recent season of Stranger Things, and will be back for its last this year, if Deadline’s mentioning of the final season is any indication. His series regular roles include AMC’s Into the Badlands from 2017 to 2019, and has credits on the network’s Low Winter Sun, Westworld on HBO, USA’s Colony, and NBC’s American Odyssey as well.
Lanterns stars Aaron Pierre as John Stewart Jr., the new Green Lantern Corps. recruit being paired with Lantern legend Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, together described as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” John Sr.’s wife Bernadette is played by Nicole Ari Parker. Kelly Macdonald plays Hal’s reported love interest, Sheriff Kerry, who seems to be pursued over the course of the season, Garret Dillahunt plays “modern cowboy” William Macon, Jason Ritter as his son Billy Macon, Poorna Jagannathan plays Zoe, John’s reported love interest, and Ulrich Thomsen plays the villain Sinestro. Showrunner Chris Mundy, previously of Ozark, and co-writers and executive producers Lindelof and Tom King all developed the show. James Hawes directs the first two episodes and also executive produces with Ron Schmidt. The other directors are Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov, while the costume designer is Cynthia Ann Summers. Lanterns is the first live action series crafted for the new DC Universe and premieres in early 2026 on HBO.
