A New Trailer For Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' Remake Was Released During The Academy Awards
Look at this stuff. Could it be neat?
As promised, Disney took viewers deeper under the sea Sunday night during the 95th Academy Awards, with the latest trailer for their live action remake of The Little Mermaid. In fact it wasn’t just a regular ad break, it was an actual segment of the ceremony, presented by the film’s Ariel and Ursula, actresses Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy.
The trailer sees Eric’s shipwreck and near-drowning and his rescue by Ariel, brought ashore by morning. After collecting thingamabobs, she’s confronted by her father King Triton (Javier Bardem) concerned by her “obsession with humans”. She soon finds Ursula, who is finally visible in her full glory after deep sea darkness in previous trailers. The first looks the audience gets at animal friends Sebastian and Flounder come from just after Ariel gets her legs, and boy do they look not cartoony at all. The rest of the trailer starts with the “Part of Your World” sequence as the song itself continues under a perfectly bright and colorful sequence crowded enough to be “Under the Sea”, eventually making it back for the signature rock situationing before more scenes, including the rowboat scene with “Kiss the Girl”.
Bailey is making her feature film debut having rose to fame with music with her sister Chloe, comes off a several season run on Grownish. She, Bardem, and McCarthy are joined by Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder and Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle. The Little Mermaid is directed by Rob Marshall, with the original film’s composer Alan Menken returning to score the remake and co-writing several new songs with Lin-Manuel Miranda. It is set for release on May 26, 2023. The trailer can be viewed below.
