Ready For Betty? Liv Tyler Signs On To 'Captain America: Brave New World'
The actress is making her return to the MCU after debuting in 'The Incredible Hulk'
This return is a long time coming. Liv Tyler is finally set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Betty Ross in Captain America: Brave New World. The character’s sole previous appearance in the films to this point was 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
As a refresher, Betty Ross was a cellular biologist at Culver University recruited by the Army to be part of the project that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk. She was also his romantic interest and of course, the daughter of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. At the time, Bruce was played by Edward Norton, and her father was played by William Hurt. In The Avengers, Bruce would be played by Mark Ruffalo.
In Phase Two, Banner’s entire supporting cast was absent, making zero appearances. This changed when Thunderbolt Ross, who continued to be played by William Hurt appeared as Secretary of State in Captain America: Civil War, and proposed the Sokovia Accords that divided the Avengers. He would then pursue Natasha Romanoff in enforcement during her film, which took place between Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, attending Tony’s funeral in Endgame. With Hurt passing last March, the character has been recast to Harrison Ford, who will debut in the role in Brave New World, reportedly now President of the United States, and follow that up with Thunderbolts.
In general, it seems Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie)’s first full-fledged appearance as Captain America will follow up on a lot of Incredible Hulk elements, as Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns is also returning, having mutated to become The Leader. Elsewhere, Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky/The Abomination would appear in Shang-Chi and She-Hulk: Attorney At Law, and in an act of table scraps, Martin Starr’s college student in The Incredible Hulk was retconned to be Mr. Harrington from the MCU Spider-Man trilogy.
The Cloverfield Paradox director Julius Onah is directing Brave New World, which also features The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s Carl Lumbly and Danny Ramirez in the cast, as well as Shira Haas from Unorthodox. Exact plot details are still unknown, but the script is by series creator Malcolm Spellman and writer Dalan Musson. Tyler’s other credits include the The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Ad Astra. Captain America: Brave New World is set for release on May 3, 2024.
