Mar10 Day 2023 Puts Emphasis on 'The Super Mario Bros Movie' Ahead Of Release
One final Direct, one final trailer
Mar10 Day, the annual March 10 celebration of the Mario franchise because it’s visually similar to “Mario”, has come and gone this year, With it came the final Nintendo Direct for The Super Mario Bros Movie, and the final trailer for the film within it. Admittedly, I don’t know what the extent of the video game side of the celebration was so we’ll be going with this.
The festivities started with the Nintendo Direct, Thursday afternoon in America but early Friday morning in Japan, which not only had Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination’s Chris Meledandri take their victory lap, but Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong), Charlie Day (Luigi), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad) and Chris Pratt (Mario) banter together in the same white void, which is very welcome after previous Directs had them record their segments alone from their respective homes. Jack Black (Bowser) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Peach) do their own segment about them being friends as opposed to the antagonism of Bowser to Peach. Both segments do see the other actors advocate for their own feature either as part of Mario Day or their own day.
The trailer itself sees Luigi awaken locked up in his cage following capture, unsure of where he is. Luma’s there too, awaiting the sweet release of death. Bowser gathers his army for the invasion of the Mushroom Kingdom. We get a fire-powered Donkey Kong for an ally as Mario and Peach seek to presumably rescue Luigi. They go platforming together, while the rest of the trailer becomes incredibly Mario Kart-y and brings in Rainbow Road, it’s pretty great. The Direct’s final segment allowed us to hear from the film’s directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic for the first time, talking about Rainbow Road and designing the Karts for it in such a faithful way, with the advancing animation technology put into it
Later in the night, the cast, including Fred Armisen and even Miyamoto and Meledandri, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, singing the Mario theme and the Underground theme with Fallon and the Roots a capella. The Super Mario Bros. Movie opens nationwide on April 5.
