Marvel’s 'Thunderbolts*' Has An Assembly To Risk, Releases Teaser Trailer
Marvel’s version of the Suicide Squad with pre-established characters will finally arrive in theaters in May
Two months ago at Marvel Studios’s Hall H San Diego Comic-Con panel, Thunderbolts* had its first trailer showcased to attendees, along with The Fantastic Four: First Steps footage and a second Captain America: Brave New World trailer. None of that was released to the public, until Monday morning when by all accounts that Thunderbolts* trailer was finally released to the public.
Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, pays her father Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian, played by David Harbour a visit. Harbour was the only one to attend the panel suited up. She’s feeling rather unfulfilled and empty. Becoming work-focused hasn’t been an answer, and on one mission she’s attacked by John Walker aka US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Ava Starr aka Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Antonia Dreykov the Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), the latter of whom have new suits. Then Lewis Pullman’s Bob, the worst-kept Sentry secret, is seen for the first time stumbling into things. Especially significant as he’s one of the film’s recasts after Steven Yeun dropped out. They all have shady backgrounds, whether having done robberies, murder-for-hire, and shadow operations, and that’s when Yelena explains someone is trying to take them out. Bucky (Sebastian Stan) spies on Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who says “We’re brought up with this belief that there are good guys, and there are bad guys. But, eventually, you come to realize that there are bad guys, and there are worse guys. And nothing else.” All of them have been forced to team up to conduct covert operations on behalf of the U.S. government.
The asterisk is very intentional and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says its meaning will be revealed by the film when it’s released. There’s no sign of Harrison Ford’s President Ross, the namesake of the team, or Geraldine Viswanathan’s character yet but it is only a teaser. Thunderbolts* is based on Kurt Busiek’s comic series of the same name, and directed by Jake Schreier. Many were surprised to find that Scarlett Johansson, who played Black Widow Natasha Romanoff from 2010 to the 2021 film where Pugh debuted as Yelena, among the list of executive producers with Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, and Jason Tamez, while Feige is producing. The screenplay is written by Black Widow, Transformers One, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps writer Eric Pearson, Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo. The film is set to mark Marvel’s return to May with its May 2, 2025 release.
