Max Comes Bearing First 'Lanterns' Photo To Mark Production Start
The DC Studios series is set to premiere in early 2026 on HBO
DC Studios continues a very good week, following its substantially-revealing press event showing the breadth of its slate. And for Green Lantern, it’s getting quite the overdue media resurgence. In that slate was the announcements of My Adventures with Green Lantern, a Jessica Cruz-starring animated series set in the world of My Adventures with Superman, and DC Super Powers, an animated series which enrolls an unspecified Green Lantern at the Alliance School for Heroes. With Nathan Fillion’s debut as Guy Gardner in Superman deep in post, attention in the DC Universe turns to the HBO series Lanterns, starring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. It has officially started production, as marked by the event but also newly by Max, the series’s original but still streaming home.
The streamer tweeted “Kyle Chandler is Hal Jordan. Aaron Pierre is John Stewart. #Lanterns, the new HBO Original Series from DC Studios, is now in production.” and unveiled the first image from the series itself featuring them. Out on the open road, Pierre as John is absolutely clean, while Chandler’s Hal definitely has a scuffed look to him. Left hands are fully visible to the camera, while John’s right is angled in such a way to obscure his ring, and Hal’s is in the middle of the shot, turned toward the camera. It’s golden with a green head, contrasting Guy’s which is entirely green in that crystalline way. Studio co-CEO James Gunn expressed excitement at the development, calling the series “something special”.
Kyle Chandler And Aaron Pierre Are HBO’s 'Lanterns' As Series Rings Its First Director
Beware their power. HBO and DC Studios’s Lanterns, the Green Lantern series of the new DC Universe has found its stars in Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. When Pierre’s casting was announced Chandler’s was winding down and expected to close, doing so just hours later.
Pierre’s Stewart is the new recruit being paired with Lantern legend Jordan, described here as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.” Kelly Macdonald plays Hal’s reported love interest, Sheriff Kerry, who seems to be pursued over the course of the season, Garret Dillahunt plays “modern cowboy” William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan plays Zoe, John’s reported love interest, and Ulrich Thomsen plays the villain Sinestro. Showrunner Chris Mundy, previously of Ozark, and co-writers and executive producers Lindelof and Tom King all developed the show. James Hawes directs the first two episodes and also executive produces with Ron Schmidt. Newly-confirmed directors include Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov, while the costume designer is Cynthia Ann Summers. Lanterns premieres in early 2026 on HBO.
