'Mystery Science Theater 3000' Dips Into The Corman Well Again For Its Next Season 14 Experiment Reveal

It’s only been three days since Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson released the third update to his crowdfunding campaign to fund the cult show’s 14th season. In it, he revealed the first film they’ve prepared to riff in it, Battle Beyond the Stars. Now in the newest campaign update, he’s ready to reveal the next film to get the treatment.
It’s Deathsport, the 1978 film starring David Carradine as Kaz Oshay, captured by the tyrannical Lord Zirpola, played by David McLean, to compete in his lethal sporting game, the titular Deathsport. It is a gladiatorial contest where criminals battle on laser-equipped motorcycles, known as “destructocycles”. He meets a female guide named Deneer, and when they escape they quest to rescue a child from mutant cannibals and stop a war between rival city-states.
The film is another Roger Corman production, directed by Allan Arkush and Nicholas Niciphor. While Deathsport might not have as many familiar names as Battle Beyond the Stars in front of or behind the camera, let alone as big as James Cameron. Deneer’s actress, Claudia Jennings was apparently a Playboy Playmate and would die in a car crash about a year and a half after the film’s release. Her other acting credits include The Man Who Fell to Earth, and episodes of Ironside and The Brady Bunch. Filming seemed to have nonexistent sobriety. Drinking and drugs were rampant. Niciphor said that it became "hell" from day three. "The script was too ambitious, the shooting schedule too tight and...the crew and the cast were largely sodden with drugs."
All in all it’s a rather brief update, urging to share their social media posts to get the word out, but Hodgson does tease livestream events. It is very probable that he’s optimistic from what’s been reported about the SAG-AFTRA strike, that if the actors get their fair deal from the AMPTP, the actors can be on hand to participate in such events as the live riff-alongs like the six the last campaign had, or whatever else Hodgson has up his sleeve. With 22 days left in the campaign, he wants to start doing them as soon as next week, apparently late enough in it for another update to come in the early part. Who will be able to partake? Depends on how things go. Keep circulating the links.
