New 'Steven Universe' Series 'Lars Of The Stars' Announced For Prime Video
The Cartoon Network Studios panel at Annecy International Animation Film Festival also included new looks at some of last year’s announced shows
Steven Universe is officially back, even if it has a new platform friend to complete it. It certainly is a new future, as during the Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe showcase at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, series creator Rebecca Sugar announced the next series in the franchise, Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars, and it’s being made for Amazon Prime Video.
Executive produced by Sugar alongside her partner and OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes creator Ian Jones-Quartey, the series follows Lars Barriga, voiced by Matthew Moy, described as an “eternal teenager and space outlaw”, as he became immortal when Steven resurrected him with his healing powers in the original series. Lars turned pale pink, and gained Gem-like abilities, including the ability to create portals through his hair. The official description, tells that he and the Off-Colors, a group of misfit gems he’s been leading since around then, as they “smuggle contraband, evade the authorities, and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire. New 'Regular Show' Series Revealed, 'Foster’s Home’ Preschool Series Gets Title At Annecy Unveiling
It’s an IP-heavy time for Cartoon Network as the Zas demands, and after much of a lull, a full production slate was on hand for Warner Bros. Animation’s studio focus panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The previously reported trio of
The landing spot of Prime Video wasn’t elaborated upon, but does show signs of what Cartoon Network Studios and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe splintering, as The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball premieres on Hulu later this year. At the panel, a new intro was promised Gumball & Darwin’s void storyline will be resolved, taking time thanks to the delays to the movie. Topics tackled include AI and generational trauma. Footage shown sees Miss Simian stealing the school's budget to ultimately buy laptops, giving her a bit of spotlight in doing so.
There were no other new series announced, but plenty of updates on series announced for Annecy last year, with lead minds in town for the event which celebrated 25 years of Cartoon Network Studios in a separate panel. Adam Muto offered up a very early look at Adventure Time: Side Quests, particularly its opening sequence still a work in progress. The theme song is a newly recorded version of the original by the original singers The Moldy Peaches. As for Fionna and Cake, it seems to be staying on HBO Max, no reason to quite expect otherwise. Sugar had earlier revealed and performed an original song that she wrote for its upcoming second season. New clips and images made clear that the Huntress has an increased role. “This time, we wanted to keep most of the adventures in Fiona’s world,” Muto explained. “And I thought that would make it more normal, but it’s still pretty strange. And that’s kind of baked into Adventure Time DNA.”
J. G. Quintel came armed with both teases for his Regular Show continuation (title still to be announced), but coyly keeping most details secret as well. He trolled the audience by promising character designs but delivering a slideshow of cartoon food products that the audience still enjoyed. For his YA series Super Mutant Magic Academy, based on the comic of the same name by Jillian Tamaki, artwork and an animatic were shown. “I try really hard to find people through comics,” Quintel explained of the show’s origins, discovering the source material in 2015. “I met her and said, ‘You should make this into a show,’ and she said, ‘I can’t, but maybe if you did it.’ I told her I would remember that, and literally seven years later I called her when I got a development deal at [the studio.]”
Craig McCracken, who shared an early look at Foster’s Funtime for Imaginary Friends, the preschool Foster’s Home spinoff. Despite the younger aim, McCracken insisted it would not necessarily be educational or aspirational, prioritizing humor above all else. “It’s almost like a cartoon parody of a preschool show,” McCracken explained, saying that one rule during production was “Laughs over Lectures,” emphasizing his insistence. In a brief animatic clip, it was made clear when Bloo taught S.M.A.R.-10, Figmit, Superstar, Unicorny Pony, and Krokeo, the day’s lesson was to never ever ever ever ever trust adults, because they will make you do things like eat broccoli.
And finally, there wasn’t much on the Warner Bros. Animation side, no new series announced to utilize the Hanna-Barbera library, no updates on Go-Go Mystery Machine or anything from DC Studios. However, Teen Titans Go! will widen its lead as DC’s longest-running animated series as it has been renewed for a tenth season that will likely bring it past 500 episodes. Luke Cormican, Peggy Regan and Sam Register continue to executive produce.
