New 'Tales of the TARDIS' Confirmed To Be Fourth Doctor Serial 'Pyramids Of Mars'
Let’s watch a classic adventure as the world is given the gift of death
By his hand, all creation shall fall. Following the events of last week’s Doctor Who episode “The Legend of Ruby Sunday”, which saw Susan Triad and all of Susan Twist’s characters revealed to be vessels for the all-powerful Osiran named Sutekh, who also had been causing the TARDIS’s grumbles as a hanger-on since “Wild Blue Yonder”. So the BBC confirmed Monday that indeed, his sole prior appearance, the 1975 Fourth Doctor serial Pyramids of Mars will be the centerpiece of the surprise Tales of the TARDIS episode discovered last week.
Premiering Thursday, June 20 at 8 PM on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer, Ruby Sunday’s place as companion and audience surrogate (played by Millie Gibson) is most evident as she too will need the primer as to who this resurfaced enemy (voiced once again by Gabriel Woolf) is and his exact history with the Doctor. It’ll be 28 hours before the season finale “Empire of Death”, and she and Fifteen, played by Ncuti Gatwa step aboard the Remembered TARDIS, seemingly mid-battle to reflect on their recent adventures according to the description. It is the only time the incumbent TARDIS team has stepped into the Remembered TARDIS, and considering what has transpired may very well be his backup.
The four-part serial was back when the Fourth Doctor was still traveling with companion Sarah Jane Smith, played by the late Elisabeth Sladen. In 1911, the grounds of the Old Priory are littered with Egyptian mummies walking among them. The Doctor and Sarah find that the ancient and powerful evil that is Sutekh is menacing mankind, on the verge of escaping his prison. They must stop him before he brings death to all humanity. The serial has been remastered into a feature-length omnibus episode with updated visual effects. Smith would encounter The Trickster, a member of the same pantheon as Sutekh, on her Tenth Doctor-era spinoff series The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Phil Collinson, Executive Producer, says: “Revisiting the rich history of Doctor Who is endlessly thrilling and this is no exception. It’s so exciting to bring back Tales of the TARDIS again, and to revisit a classic enemy of the Doctor. Gabriel Woolf as Sutekh, returning to terrify a whole new generation of children in a blistering season finale is what makes this show so special and appeal to so many across the generations.”
The official Doctor Who YouTube channel has uploaded an even more concise telling of the story, serving as a sample of the remastered footage. It can be watched below before the Thursday, June 20 premiere at 8 PM on BBC Four and BBC iPlayer. As a reminder, that’s 8 PM UK time because why bother with conversions when Americans won’t have it available to them legally anyway.
