New 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' Featurette Showcases Heroic Friends; Episode Titles And First Clip Released
It’s a busy couple of days for the newest Spider-Man cartoon
With less than a week until Marvel Animation’s Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man premieres on Disney+ on January 29, Marvel Studios is on a promotional blitz with a featurette, confirmation of its release schedule, and revealing the titles of the ten episodes in its first season.
Posted to YouTube, the featurette runs under two minutes and is called “Everybody Knows”, named such because as they first boast, everyone knows Spider-Man, and a healthy part of that is because of his rather consistent television and film presence of the last 20+ years on top of what came before. Thus, as the latest in a long line of Spider-Man cartoons, the mission to stand out was very clear. The Steve Ditko-drawn comics come to life. Of-the-now but vintage animation. There’s a Venom in this world, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and rogues like Scorpion and Doctor Octopus are all here. Nico Minoru, Pearl Pangan, and Lonnie Lincoln get spotlight too with a line from Amadeus Cho. Expect the unexpected from the fun, excitement, and action.
And while we had known for a little bit that the first two episodes will make up the premiere release, followed by two weeks of three-episode releases and capped off by a two-episode release for the finale. January 29 sees “Amazing Fantasy”, referencing the comics title Spider-Man and his world were born in, and “The Parker Luck”. February 5 sees “Secret Identity Crisis”, which likely gives Peter early balancing issues between hero and civilian life, “Hitting the Big Time” which seems to indicate a substantial publicity boost from the Oscorp partnership, and “The Unicorn Unleashed”, the first title to telegraph specific character involvement outside the obvious. February 12 continues that with “Duel with the Devil”, which is likelier the episode to feature Daredevil (Charlie Cox) and Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) than say a demonic encounter causing a Doctor Strange teamup, as well as “Scorpion Rising”. Episode 8 is “Tangled Web” while the season wraps with “Hero or Menace”, where he clearly starts to fall out of public favor, and “If This Be My Destiny…” where his resolve will likely strengthen after his confidence is shook, fully embracing the hero life. He got knocked down, he’ll get back up again.
As this was being written, a minute long clip was released, introducing us to Nico (voiced by Grace Song) just as Peter gets bitten, and a poorly-timed bite at that. He’ll make it up to her though. And this Spider is still on the loose.
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’s logline describes Peter, here voiced by Hudson Thames, as “on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots”. Jeff Trammell serves as head writer and executive producer while Mel Zwyer is supervising director. The other executive producers are Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt. Both Winderbaum and Vasquez-Eberhardt appear in the featurette. The series also features Zeno Robinson as Harry Osborn, Colman Domingo as his father Norman Osborn, Eugene Byrd as Lonnie Lincoln, Hugh Dancy as Otto Octavius aka Doctor Octopus, and Paul F. Tompkins as Bentley Wittman aka The Wizard. Chameleon, Speed Demon, Tarantula, Rhino, and Butane will also somehow fit into this ten-episode season.
