Pokémon And Lego Enter Brick Breakout Partnership
Finally, Pokémon can graduate from Mega Bloks after over 20 years. First releases will be in 2026
If you thought I wasn’t going to cover this or I forgot about this, yeah, I did, I don’t think I had this in my bookmarks so it didn’t come to mind sometimes. But that doesn’t mean I can’t chronicle it. On Tuesday, March 18 the LEGO Group and The Pokémon Company International announced a new multi-year partnership that brings thousands of characters…or at least the favorites from Pokémon the highest-grossing media franchise in the world to Lego, one of the biggest toy brands in the world. It begins in 2026, in time for the 30th anniversary of the Japanese franchise’s debut. Details are to come, as none were found in the announcement.
Previously, the closest the Pokémon franchise had gotten was working with the competitor Mega, through their Mega Bloks Build 'n Battle sets in the third generation era, and a more committed Mega Construx era, which began in 2017. It featured single Pokémon which came with scenery, a battle scenario range called “Versus”, Evolution sets that feature full evolutionary lines, a full line tying into the 2019 Detective Pikachu movie, a Poké Ball range that has Poké Balls, sometimes Great, Premier, Luxury, Ultra, Quick, Friend, and Lure, accompany the Pokémon, which had around 20 series to it, and premium and other ranges. Dozens if not close to 100 Pokémon were featured. However, releases dried up in 2023, if Bulbapedia’s listings are up to date, it’s likely contracts expired somewhere along the way. LEGO has already worked with Nintendo for sets on other franchises in the company, like Animal Crossing, Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda, which probably makes for quite the addition/unification. They’ve done the Nintendo Entertainment System, are readying a Game Boy, and on the verge of releasing a Mario Kart set composed of 1,972 pieces.
