Quinta Brunson Gestures Back For 'SNL' Encore In May With Benson Boone
Teagues above everyone else in comedy, these beautiful shows that I talk
Quinta Brunson’s Sunny day is still ahead, but first, she’s heading back to Studio 8H. Kicking off the final month of Saturday Night Live’s milestone 50th season, the Abbott Elementary creator and star is making her return to host on May 3, with musical guest Benson Boone.
Brunson’s hosting debut came just over two years ago, on April 1, 2023 with Lil Yachty as musical guest. Her opening monologue told that she had been dreaming about hosting since she was a kid and ended on a message advocating for teachers. The episode, which earned her a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, featured two sketches that actually became recurring this season, with “Traffic Altercation”, which also starred Mikey Day and Chloe Fineman, being followed up with a parking lot edition in December’s Martin Short episode where he was now the opposing driver, with an appearance by Melissa McCarthy as that driver’s wife. Barry the Midwife, played by The Cat in the Hat co-star Bowen Yang, also debuted in Brunson’s episode, and returned in the March 29 Mikey Madison episode. That’s not all however, as Brunson has returned to the show already, appearing at February’s 50th anniversary special with a significant part during the Q&A portion.
Mikey Madison, Best Actress Oscar Winner For 'Anora', Heads To 'SNL'; Jack Black, Jon Hamm To Follow
We’re in the final third or so of the milestone 50th season of Saturday Night Live. Just hours after the sketch comedy series’s most recent episode saw Lady Gaga pull off double duty rather spectacularly, Neon’s Anora had a victorious night at the Academy Awards
Brunson was to have a film released on May 9, Golden, as part of a huge ensemble that included Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Missy Elliott, Janelle Monáe, Jaboukie Young-White, and Tim Meadows. However the film, produced by Pharrell Williams and directed by Michael Gondry, was canceled and shelved in February, a "unanimous agreement" between them and other producers that the film "did not live up" to their expectations. Boone is a 22 year-old singer/songwriter making his first appearance on the show. He’s best known for his hit single “Beautiful Things,” and in his Coachella set this weekend, he debuted the title track of his upcoming sophmore album, American Heart, which is certainly what is brought him his booking. He was also portrayed by cast member Marcello Hernandez in the Madison episode’s “Jury Duty” sketch, bursting out into his hit.
The headliner announcement was made during Saturday night’s episode hosted by Jon Hamm with musical guest Lizzo, the third and last in the latest run of episodes, with Jack Black chicken jockeying last week. April is indeed already done. Reports confirm that May will finish the season with three episodes, with the two subsequent pairs of headliners to be announced later.
