Revisiting 'Together', My Own 'Power Rangers SPD' Reunion Outline From 2013 In 2025
As we enter a different kind of not too distant future, let’s look back on, well not quite an early work but will sure look like it
Happy new year! It’s officially 2025, the year the 13th season of Power Rangers, Power Rangers SPD, was set in, and 20 years from its original airing year of 2005. Basically, cop Rangers in the future. The show’s actual anniversary date is February 5, but I think now is just as good to bring it. SPD was Power Rangers’s final 38 episode season (they shrink to 32 for the next period), and it stars Brandon Jay McLaren, later of Graceland, The Rookie, Snowfall, and Ransom, as Red Ranger Jack Landors, Chris Violette as Blue Ranger Sky Tate, Matt Austin as Green Ranger Bridge Carson, Monica May as Yellow Ranger Elizabeth “Z” Delgado, Aly Purott as Pink Ranger Syd Drew, John Tui as Shadow Ranger Commander Anubis “Doggie” Cruger, Rene Naufahu as Emperor Gruumm, Michelle Langstone as Kat Manx, Barney Duncan as Piggy, and, in his first major recurring role in the franchise, Kelson Henderson as Boom. In 2013, Austin was brainstorming ideas for what was essentially an unauthorized SPD reunion special. I believe he was asking fans for ideas but it never seemed like a serious pitch. I don’t remember if others ended up doing anything. Still, I made an outline on Wattpad, titling it “Together”, as every episode of the season is a single word. I then proceeded to not touch it up at all over the next 11 years even as my understanding of things such as how productions work grew. It’s the only thing I ever posted on Wattpad. So it might be rough.
The outline started with insisting on a double-episode runtime of 45 minutes. Reading it over sounded too lecture-y on details that ultimately don’t mean much, especially as such has been superseded by reality. The actual Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th anniversary special subtitled Once & Always, released in April 2023 exceeds even that limit with a 58 minute runtime.
Since getting Doggie's costume will be extremely difficult and unlikely, I'm leaving him out of the main plot of the episode. I think a throwaway line of Doggie and Isinia being on vacation would be nice to include. Kat will act in Doggie's place for this mission. Doggie should not succeed Birdie at this point. It's a little soon. It's better to use the animation elsewhere. Give Sky the full episode to be Red. He should not be promoted to Commander until early 2027.
Here is the passage that made me remember how it was essentially a fan film. That they obviously wouldn’t have access to the original props like those costumes. Looking back, I probably underestimated fan propbuilding and cosplay construction. It maybe never even entered my mind at the time.
At the end of Endings, there was no one to fill the SPD Green position. I think Z should become SPD Green and be the first female Green Ranger in Power Rangers history. Who will be SPD Yellow? Throw Boom a bone. Make his dreams come true by making him SPD Yellow. After all, he led the Base's employees during the invasion. He should be rewarded for his strength and courage. Originally I thought a C-Squad cadet would be promoted, but then Matt jokingly said "I don't want to work with no newbie". Then the Boom idea hit me. And Boom is no newbie. I think it's perfect. I apologize for going beyond the main 5 but with only 4 actual Rangers employed, the position needed to be filled.
God there are so many layers to this thanks to subsequent official productions. Henderson would go on to play Mick Kanic, the mentor for Ninja Steel. The first season finale would see Brody split the Red Ninja Star amongst himself, his father, and Mick, making him a Red Ninja Steel Ranger. Mick would then keep these powers and use them again in the original continuity’s final season, 2023’s Cosmic Fury. Within the coming year from that Ninja Steel episode, the interactive live-streamed tabletop role-playing game web series Power Rangers Hyperforce had introduced Lina Song in the episode “SPD Emergency”, portrayed by game master Malika Lim. Originally a D-Squad detective she was promoted to B-Squad Green. Subsequently, the Boom! Studios graphic novel Soul of the Dragon saw Tommy Oliver and Kat Hillard’s son J.J. (first heard in the 25th anniversary special “Dimensions in Danger”) join SPD as the Green Ranger with his dad’s Dragon Shield, as Lina had already become Blue Ranger. A holiday card released at the end of the year to promote the comic also revealed what Ranger Sky became by the 2027 that Bridge was pulled from in Operation Overdrive’s own 15th anniversary celebration “Once A Ranger” that resulted in Bridge being Red Ranger for it. He had become Deka Ranger.
Jack should only be called on if the situation is dire enough. He does not need a morpher. He has his fighting skills and (hopefully) his civillian power. He should let the SPD weaponry come to him. And yes, the situation will be dire enough.
This I still pretty much agree with. He did leave SPD in the season finale, and as much as it might be that he’s left out of official duty, there’s always casual time with him that can be done. After, I advocated the exclusion of the Omega Ranger Sam, to keep focus on the reunion of the main cast, but I can’t even endorse it enough to reprint. It gets too petty and ranty. But I was 19.
So, what happens? Well, it’s 4 months after “Endings”, and the new status quo is briefly recapped. “Together” properly starts with a visit to Samuels Clothing, which the now-engaged Jack and Ally now own. Syd and Z gush over how beautiful Ally's engagement ring is. The guys chat while packing boxes of clothes for delivery. Mora's prison card ended up in Newtech City's neighboring city. The card malfunctions and does not adjust to her deal with Gruumm to keep her young wearing off. Her aging accelerates, but does not give the same body she originally had (allowing for recasting). She'll cover her eye tattoo with makeup. Morgana gets a new battlesuit because it won't fit her new body, as well as a new drawing pad. Wanting revenge on SPD, she takes up residence in an old abandoned building and plots it. She ends up creating her own little monster army with built in commuications tech, each drawn with her eye tattoo in their ankles. Beginning her plan, she situates herself at a location SPD is patrolling, and catches Sky's attention. She flirts with him, convincing him to tour SPD's base. She takes notes. A few weeks later, Sky's completely head-over-heels for this mysterious woman. Morgana unleashes a monster to a quarry to fill the quota and to act as a distraction. This battle, with Syd, Bridge and Z happens simultaneously with what happens at the base. There's an unmorphed battle with a bunch of Krybots, then morphed against the monster, which after being defeated with weapons grows to Megazord fight. A Pink, Green, and Blue-component-only Megazord then defeats and arrests the monster. Morgana enters the base without any questioning by the guards thanks to her connections to Sky, managing to reach the unguarded holding room for the capture cards. Her attempts to unlock the room trigger the base's alarms, and morphs into her battle suit a split second after Sky spots who she is. The lower cadets are easily defeated while Sky hesitates. Kat and Boom struggle in subduing her. Kat manages to press a button. The effort against Morgana continues, as Jack, who received Kat's distress signal, charges in to snap Sky out of it and the two join in to subdue Morgana. She uses her chance to escape to reveal herself to Sky, the makeup having washed away by the sweat running down her face. Everyone meets up, and the three Rangers reveal that they recognized the tattoo not only from Morgana's old form, but the monster they were fighting. Morgana is taken to a cell similar to the one Mirloc was held in. After receiving emotional support from his friends, Sky promises to not let his emotions compromise his duties to that extreme again, especially now that he's finally Red Ranger. Also this just-concluded fight is the fight where Boom's confidence levels stay up and his klutziness is officially no longer an issue. Bridge has pizza delivered for everyone, with 2 loaves of Italian bread, no garlic knots, with two little containers of butter.
Yeah I don’t know why I detailed that last joke the way I did. Maybe there’s something to it, but the plot doesn’t seem too terrible.
Anyway, season showrunner Greg Aronowitz posted on Instagram about the arrival of the new year and his season’s anniversary, writing “Happy New Year! I’m excited about this one! 2025 was one of the best years of my life! Haha, yes, I meant for that to be past tense. I already lived this year two decades ago! 2025 was the date I chose for the storyline in my season of Power Rangers, which I produced in 2005. It seemed so far in the future back then! And now it is today. No giant robots or alien contact yet (well, maybe Gruumm is controlling those drones in Jersey!) so the real life 2025 isn’t quite like the fictional version, but there is still cause to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of S.P.D.! I’m going to try to attend as many conventions around the country as I can this year, to meet all the fans who aren’t able to get to LA for morphiconž I’ll also be posting never before seen photos and videos, as well as telling stories about my experiences making SPD and life in the alternate 2025! Stay tuned for details!” He also revealed he teamed up with “some incredible artists” to create all new original designs for pins, patches, posters, and other merchandise for his Etsy store over the course of the year. In the meantime, Power Rangers SPD is streaming on YouTube, Pluto TV and Tubi.
More 'Power Rangers' Seasons Are Set To Leave Netflix
A funny thing happened on the way to December. The reported arrivals of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Power Rangers Turbo to Tubi never happened. Instead, those anticipating found Power Rangers in Space instead. And then more happened, but I’ll detail that in a bit. Still, being in December, more deals are likely to expire on December 31 as a round p…
