Rooster Teeth Revived As Co-Founder Burnie Burns Rescues Company From Warner Bros. Discovery
The razing of Warner Bros. has another raise of the dead
Well that sure was a scary year for a fandom. Rooster Teeth is back, so was declared on February 5. Hey it doesn’t become outdated until the output kicks back up. Co-founder Burnie Burns has acquired the described “fandom, gaming and comedy entertainment studio” that shut down last May because Warner Bros. Discovery continued to be careless, doing so through his newer company, Box Canyon Productions.
Founded in 2023, Box Canyon Productions is “dedicated to innovative storytelling and high-quality content across various media platforms.” There, Burns and his wife Ashley launched as hosts the podcast Morning Somewhere last year, and is where they discussed the purchase in detail in the episode “Homecoming”, which released on announcement day. On the Rooster Teeth website, which was part of the acquisition along with YouTube and other social channels. “I am excited at the challenge of bringing Rooster Teeth back to its roots,” said Burns. “The heart of this brand has always been its fans, and I look forward to writing a new chapter together.” As “an early pioneer of online video content”, Rooster Teeth is said to have set the standard for thriving fan-first entertainment in the digital age. The announcement touts a “renewed dedication to Rooster Teeth’s original mission”: to entertain, inspire, and connect, and to reignite the “collaborative and community-driven energy”. Financial terms of the sale were not revealed at the time and seemingly still haven’t been.
Viz Media Acquires 'RWBY' Following Rooster Teeth Shutdown
Back in March, it was revealed that Warner Bros. Discovery would be shutting down Rooster Teeth, which had been in operation for over 20 years due to “challenges facing digital media resulting from fundamental shifts in consumer behavior and monetization across platforms, advertising, and patronage." Back up and running, the company has promised a new production development slate of productions for 2025, including renewing some of their classic shows, alongside a new original audio adventure titled Again, and an untitled reimagining of Burns’ first film, The Schedule. Something has to come in to replace the gaming shows Funhaus and Achievement Hunter, as well as RWBY following its sale to Viz Media last summer, and shows whose rights were returned to their creators during the dead period. Red vs. Blue, the web show that put the company on the map, in fact the longest running web show ever, concluded with a final season because of the closure. It would probably be boasted if they were going to return to it. What shows will be revived is still waiting to be answered two months and a week later. “The long-range plan here is to have a production slate that is up and running with new shows by summer of 2025,” Burns said, adding, “If you liked [post-apocalyptic drama series] Day 5 from Rooster Teeth, it’s very much in that vein.” He continued “There is a lot of work in front of us, a lot of work,” Burnie Burns said. “As I’m sitting here in this living room I am surrounded by hard drives with literally two decades of content… and I’m going through an archive process with it right now that’s just to get basically to the starting line and then after that the real work begins.”
The announcement did come with a little fun, in the form of a YouTube video where Burns pulls up to what should the company’s offices in Austin, Texas, swiping in — and entering a dark, empty studio. “Guys? Why are the lights off?” Burns calls out. “I’m back from gettin’ milk.” Turning on the lights, he pauses before exclaiming: “What the hell happened?!”
This would end up being the first of two sales the company would make in two months, as by the end of March, Warner Bros. would sell Coyote vs. Acme to The Day The Earth Blew Up savior Ketchup Entertainment, freeing it from eternal shelving. The film starring Looney Tunes favorite Wile E. Coyote is set for a theatrical release in 2026.
'Coyote Vs. Acme' Officially Saved By Ketchup Entertainment
And so, the world sighs in celebration, never having to solely use that same frame of Wile E. Coyote sitting next to Will Forte ever again. That’s because there’s plenty more frames where that came from and we’ll be able to see it. Ketchup Entertainment
