Rupert Bears His Own Murder Stuff In 'Family Guy' Halloween Special Trailer
The Master, reborn as a murderous teddy bear? It’s aliiiiiive! Anyone but Glen Powell
If Stewie Griffin can be young and murderous, then so can Rupert. The new season of Animation Domination has begun on Fox, with the second episodes of The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and Krapopolis’s new seasons airing alongside Universal Basic Guys’s fifth on Sunday night. Family Guy is gearing up to start its season a little differently next Monday, October 14 as it premieres its Halloween special “Peter Peter Pumpkin Cheater” straight to Hulu as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. The official trailer was released Thursday.
The Griffins don’t care about who sees them try on costumes in-store, before the broken pumpkin clip already used in the San Diego Comic-Con general season trailer where Quagmire (voiced by series creator Seth MacFarlane) gets distracted by Cleveland (Arif Zahir)’s Yeezys when they’re ruined. Rupert arises in Stewie’s bed and unsheaths a knife from the holder. Chris (Seth Green) screams, Stewie might be Cher and Rupert tries to make Brian one of his victims. But then, the big draw of the episode, at least to the normies who are still swayed by guest stars. Pumpkin contest champion Patrick McCloskey, voiced by Glen Powell, pulls up in all orange, with pumpkin-shaped glasses to taunt and enrage Joe (Patrick Warburton). Powell is such a draw as currently one of the most in-demand actors in all of Hollywood thanks to his roles in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, and Twisters, and just got his The Running Man remake dated for November 21, 2025.
Rupert’s murder streak may be due to his being brought to life by Stewie in a Frankensteinian fashion, decked out with the machines, the lab coat and the goggles, and the killing intent may be some unintended consequence. Showrunners Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin call Rupert the crux of the episode, Sulkin describing the storyline with comparisons to the 1992 film Single White Female, where Rupert is telling Stewie 'if I can't have you, no one can’". It is considered the “focal point” of both the Halloween aspect and the anniversary celebration. It is Rupert’s first storyline as an active participant rather than a thing to retrieve like “Road to Rupert” and “Total Recall”. Stewie also had his relationship with Rupert tested in episodes like “Quagmire’s Quagmire” and “The Talented Mr. Stewie”. But still, it was momentous enough an occasion to get legendary Shakespearean theater actor and Doctor Who’s War Master Derek Jacobi to lend his voice. He previously worked with writer Gary Janetti on the ITV series Vicious which also starred Ian McKellen, who guest starred on Family Guy in the 2018 sixteenth season episode “Send in Stewie, Please”, also written by Janetti, as Dr. Cecil Pritchfield, the only person to hear Stewie’s “true voice” in-universe. Vicious aired in the States on PBS in 2015. Appel remarked that "the idea of taking such a classically trained actor who comes by his accent naturally felt right for Stewie's partner." He also ran into Powell by happenstance and cast him shortly before the table read, and calls him a "great guy” asking "who better to play a cocky a**hole" than him?
Family Guy also stars MacFarlane as Peter, Brian, and Stewie, Alex Borstein as Lois, and Mila Kunis as Meg. The episode’s full cast has not been revealed, but Mike Henry will probably still be credited for someone, whether it’s Bruce or not. The show will follow up “Peter Peter Pumpkin Cheater” with premiering a Christmas special exclusively on Hulu closer to the holiday. How quickly hasn’t been announced. The show is scheduled to return to Fox sometime in 2025 with a full 20-episode season following last season’s strike-shortened 15, making for only eight episodes to air in this entire 25th anniversary celebration. Feels very Doctor Who-y. Anyway, the Halloween trailer can be watched below, gourd help us all.
