Two nickels joke, GOAT acknowledgements by Sony Pictures Animation in as many days, it’s not a lot but at least the studio is making noise again. It continues to be a dry period to see any footage of their upcoming slate, but at the very least, we’re getting any sort of material at all. Case in point the studio released the poster for GOAT, their upcoming animated movie with an anthropomorphic goat playing basketball. The timing is right, as it’s NBA All-Star Game weekend, and while the format is a growing point of contention, it’s still a hype point for the film whose release is this very weekend next year, which will be next season’s All Star Game weekend.
The goat is mostly in shadow, with a single spotlight on them revealing a green jersey with orange trimmings and an oddly designed basketball, as if it’s the floor of a playground jungle gym. To be quite honest, it kind of reminds me of the December 2018 teaser poster for the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, where people were picking up that the design choices made were off, even just from the proportions visible from being lit from behind, not fully seen until the infamous trailer four months later. The film does already have its tagline, and it’s “This kid’s got game”. Still no plot summary, however.
On Friday, the film was acknowledged in a set of valentines related to their upcoming films, though being released before the poster means it was the plainest without art, just text that says “You Are My GOAT”. It was alongside a K-Pop: Demon Hunters valentine that read “I get a kick out of you” and a Fixed one that shows life for the film with “My life would be blue without you”. However neither have new art, so it’s the same shot of Bull from 2023 just running away from our perspective, though it’s only part of him.
GOAT is directed by Emmy-winning Bob’s Burgers alum Tyree Dillihay, with Adam Rosette, who previously worked on DreamWorks’s Orion and the Dark, as co-director. The screenplay was written by Aaron Buchsbaum and Teddy Riley, creators of Prime Video’s Fairfax. NBA champion Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry is the film’s highest touted producer, as he does so with Erick Peyton, both coming from Unanimous Media. Its other producers include Michelle Raimo Kouyate, whose work includes The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story and Silver Linings Playbook, Adam Rosenberg, whose work includes Creed III and Into the Spider-Verse director Rodney Rothman. David Schulenburg, whose work includes the Spider-Verse shorts is co-producing. Rick Mischel and Fonda Snyder are executive producers. It is the studio’s return to theatrical releases after nearly three years.
“As a lifelong fan of animation and sports, Goat is my dream project. We’ve got a modern take on a classic story in a rich new world where amazing happens. I couldn’t ask for a better team of collaborators to help bring this experiential event to life,” said Dillihay at the time of the film’s announcement, while Curry and Peyton remarked “We’re excited to have the opportunity to work with Sony Pictures Animation on Goat, a special project we hope will resonate with families and sports fans alike. With Goat, we look forward to uplifting audiences with diverse characters and heartwarming storylines that will have you rooting for the underdog.”
