Star Wars Celebration Details 'Skeleton Crew' And Updates On 'Ahsoka'
The series are led by Jude Law and Rosario Dawson respectively
Following Andor, The Acolyte, and The Mandalorian, it was time for Skeleton Crew and Ahsoka to take the stage during the Studio Showcase panel that kicked off Star Wars Celebration Europe. And they seemed to have much more to show. Ahsoka’s teaser was publicly released, which will be broken down later.
Announced at last May’s Celebration, Skeleton Crew is very much Goonies-inspired, about a group of kids adventuring across the galaxy, enticed by Jude Law’s character. No known character names yet. The series directors were also announced, starting with co-creator Jon Watts. The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive from March 20 that Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once directors Daniels (Kwan and Scheinert) would be directing an episode together. Four other directors, David Lowery, Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Lee Isaac Chung. The three main young stars, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Kyriana Kratter, and Robert Timothy Smith were introduced, as only Law was attached at the initial announcement. Kerry Condon would also be confirmed to have a role, but no character names have been given. A behind-the-scenes look was given before its trailer played. Skeleton Crew is set to premiere later this year.
Then came Ahsoka, with live-action portrayer Rosario Dawson continuing from her start in The Mandalorian and continuing dangling plot threads from the end of the Star Wars Rebels animated series. Character and series creator Dave Filoni and executive producer Jon Favreau unveiled the trailer, which featured first looks at Natasha Liu Bordizzo and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ghost crewmates Sabine Wren and Hera Syndulla, the latter freshly revealed. Even Grand Admiral Thrawn is seen. Genevieve O’Reilly is back as Mon Mothma having most recently been seen in Andor. Ray Stevenson, who voiced Gar Saxon in Rebels, looms large as Baylan Skoll, a lightsaber-wielding foe. It can be taken that any expectation of Eman Esfandi as Ezra is more an endgame thing as finding him is a major objective for both Ahsoka and Sabine. It’s Thrawn’s return that brings them back together, and another “emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy”, as the logline said.
Ahsoka will premiere in August, as revealed at the panel. Judging by the language and less specific target, it looks as if Skeleton Crew will premiere at some point after, otherwise it would probably have a defined date. But this certainly wasn’t the end of the Studio Showcase, after all, Star Wars began on the big screen, and that’s where it shall return.
