'Star Wars Visions' Volume 2 Trailer Released At Star Wars Celebration Europe
The anthology features nine stories from nine studios
Did you know Star Wars Celebration Europe was going beyond the weekend? That’s right, Monday is the fourth day of the event. Part of its festivities included a Star Wars: Visions panel where the official trailer of the second volume of the animated anthology series was unveiled by Lucasfilm and Disney+.
The trailer is packed with clips from each of the volume’s nine stories, each from nine different studios across the globe. Aside from the lightsaber battle that opens the trailer, from the short “Sith” by studio El Guiri, it might be difficult to parse what is what and from whom without a guide, but all of that has been revealed. Titles, studios, and even casts were all announced. It’s unknown if this will be the exact order it’s to be posted on Disney+, but it seems likely. A key art poster was also released.
“Sith”’s logline reads “A former Sith apprentice, leading a peaceful, but isolated life, is confronted by the past when her old master tracks her down.” Úrsula Corberó voices Lola, the ex-Sith apprentice, while Luis Tosar voices her ex-Master. They also voice their characters in the Spanish dub. “Screecher’s Reach” comes from Cartoon Saloon, the Irish studio behind such films as The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, Wolfwalkers, and My Father’s Dragon. It sees a young girl, seeking any sort of break from her rural workhouse, discover a legendary haunted cave with a dark pull that will change her life forever. The cast includes Eva Whittaker as Daal, Alex Connolly as Baython, Niamh Moyles as Ghost, Noah Rafferty as Quinn, Molly McCann as Keena, and Anjelica Huston as the Sith Mother.
“In the Stars” by Chilean studio Punkrobot is about two sisters, Koten (Valentina Muhr) and Tichina (Julia Oviedo) living in hiding as the last of their kind on their ravaged land, squabbling to figure out survival as the Empire encroaches. The sisters must fight back when they are discovered while getting water. Muhr and Oviedo voice their characters in the Spanish dub as well. Kate Dickie and Amparo Noguera are both listed as “Officer”, but it’s unclear if there are two officers or if one is listed for the Spanish dub. “I Am Your Mother” comes from Wallace and Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, and Chicken Run studio Aardman, and features the return of Denis Lawson as Wedge Antilles. Young pilot Annisoukaline Kalfus has an embarrassingly sweet but clingy mother, Kalina, whom she must team with for a crazy family race at the academy that tests their ability to work together. They are voiced by Charitha Chandran and Maxine Peake. A rival family, Dorota and Julan Van Reeple, is voiced by Daisy Haggard and Bebe Cave.
South Korea’s Studio Mir handled “Journey to the Dark Head”. In this story, a hopeful mechanic and disillusioned young Jedi team up for a risky and unlikely quest to turn the tide against the empire, even with dark forces in pursuit. Studio Mir’s first work in television was The Legend of Korra. They went on to Voltron: Legendary Defender before becoming a reliable studio for Warner Bros. Animation’s DC projects like Young Justice, Harley Quinn, and direct-to-video films like Batman: Soul of the Dragon and both animated Mortal Kombat films. The announcement includes both the English and South Korean casts of the short. Ashley Park of Mean Girls and Emily in Paris voices Ara at both ages in the English version, while Jang Ye Na does in the South Korean. Eugene Lee Yang and Lee Kyng Tae voice Toul, Daniel Dae Kim and Yun Yong Sik voice Bichan, Albert Kong and Chwang Kwang voice the Interpreter, Greg Chun and Shin Yong Woo voice Master Leesagum and the Shopkeeper while Chun also voices the Training Partner Lim Chae Hon voices in the South Korean version. Jonella Landry and Choi Soo Min voice Master Duta while Judy Alice Lee and Lee So Young voice Master Moru and “Another Jedi”.
“The Spy Dancer” is by Studio La Cachette, which has worked on Primal and Love, Death, and Robots. This story sees the headlining dancer at a famous, Imperial-frequented cabaret using her unique skill set as a Rebellion spy, but the presence of a mysterious officer may compromise her mission. This short seems led by Camille Cottin as Loi’e, Lambert Wilson as Jon, and Rudi-James Jephcott as The Officer. “The Bandits of Golak” hails from India’s 88 Pictures, which has worked on the Tales of Arcadia franchise. It is about a boy and his force-sensitive younger sister seeking refuge in a vibrant and dangerous dhaba as they are pursued by ferocious Imperial forces who forced them to flee from their village. “The Pit” by D’Art Shtajio and Lucasfilm sees a young kyber-digging prisoner plan an escape for himself and his people. It stars Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs, the voice of Tiana Anika Noni Rose, Speechless and The Goldbergs’s Cedric Yarbrough, and even franchise regulars Steve Blum and Matthew Wood. This might be the short that looks most like the The Clone Wars family of Star Wars animated series.
The final short from this volume is “Aau’s Song” from Africa’s Triggerfish Studios, which works on Disney Junior’s just-premiered Kiya and the Kimoja Heroes. Here, a child who longs to sing is raised by her well-meaning but strict father to stay quiet because of her voice’s calamitous effect on the crystals in the nearby mines. Miplo Jantjie voices Aau while Dineo du Toit does the character’s singing. Oscar-nominated actress Cynthia Erivo voices Kratu.
Star Wars: Visions volume 2 will be released on Disney+ on Star Wars Day, May 4, along with the series premiere of Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures, which also has a linear premiere on Disney Junior.
