'Superman & Lois' Has Been Renewed For Season 4 By The CW
Its survival does come at great cost to itself and 'Gotham Knights'
The Nexstar-owned CW network has made its decision on the three shows on the bubble at the time of Upfronts. Superman & Lois has been renewed for season 4, All American: Homecoming has been renewed for a third season, and Gotham Knights has been canceled after one season. All three series come from Warner Bros. Television and studio-based Berlanti Productions.
It’s been known that only one of Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights was going to survive and become the last DC Comics-based series on the network. The former had the better ratings but the latter was very cheap to produce. So with Superman & Lois getting renewed, there are going to be quite a few changes. First off, the season length is being further reduced from 13 episodes, which both All American Homecoming and Walker received, to 10. It and Homecoming are also going to be undergoing budget cuts, resulting in a loss of series regulars, of which Superman & Lois had 12 in season 3 and Homecoming had 9 in its second season. Decisions are coming quickly because of expiring cast options. For Superman & Lois, this likely means a heavier lean into its core premise as a family drama going forward while still honoring its superhero roots. Less special effects-reliant action and superheroing.
Created by Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing and based on the DC Comics characters, Superman & Lois stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the famous duo. While it’s unknown how many of the ten other series regulars will make it to the next season, let alone the possibility of upgraded recurrers, the two likeliest, nay guaranteed to make the jump are their twin sons, Jordan and Jonathan played by Alex Garfin and Michael Bishop. It’s a family drama after all.
In Gotham Knights, Batman’s death has left Gotham City unprotected, and his adopted son, Turner Hayes (played by Oscar Morgan) has been framed for it. At least Bruce Wayne’s anyway. The predicament involves him teaming up with the also-accused Duela Dent (Olivia Rose Keegan), Harper and Cullen Row (Fallon Smythe and Tyler DiChiara), Stephanie Brown (Anna Lore), and even Carrie Kelley (Navia Robinson), the incumbent Robin. They realize that this was all orchestrated by the Court of Owls and attempt to take them down in the name of justice. Supernatural’s Misha Collins also stars as Harvey Dent. The sole 13-episode season will end with the series finale “Night of the Owls” on June 27, after Superman & Lois’s season three finale.
All American Homecoming joins its mothership, which was the first renewed show, as a survivor. Created by Nkechi Okoro Carroll, it follows All American‘s Simone Hicks, played by Geffri Hightower, who leaves her boyfriend Jordan behind in Los Angeles to attend Bringston University, a historically black college in Atlanta.
So congrats Nexstar on what they might consider a generous carryover of four shows after previously being quoted for “a couple”. And, as one may notice, neither announcement mentions it being a final season, so there’s hope for a future beyond.
Thank you. Not being based in Hollywood I'm behind on a lot of who owns what now.
