'Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story' Trailer Released
The man you knew with the story you didn’t is ready to fly in September
First we learn that Superman’s composer John Williams has his own documentary coming, now we have the trailer for the documentary about the Man of Steel himself. The trailer for Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story was released Monday by Warner Bros. Pictures. It demonstrates that Christopher Reeve’s wheelchair-bound quadriplegia from his 1995 horse riding accident made him no less the hero he had been for the over 15 years to that point since taking on the role of Superman.
“I think a hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles,” Reeve, who died in 2004 at the age of 52, says at one point. He had played the Man of Steel in four films from 1978 to 1987, before the accident left him paralyzed from the neck down. The doc just as much about Reece’s perseverance in will to live and the advocacy he took on for disability rights and care, lifted by the strength of family and friends behind him, in search of discovering a cure for spinal cord injuries, as it is about his life beforehand, his Hollywood and personal history, with home movies and interviews with Reeve’s three children, as well as his professional peers and friends, including Glenn Close and Susan Sarandon. The trailer even highlights his close friendship with Juilliard roommate Robin Williams, who died in 2014.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, who is directing and wrote the next film iteration of Superman played by David Corenswet, called the film a “powerful” and “incredibly moving” film that he “can’t recommend enough” when sharing the trailer on his socials. The previous day, when the trailer was announced to be coming today, Gunn shared the film’s poster and said he “adore(s)” the film. Reeve’s youngest son Will has a cameo in the film also called simply Superman, which releases on July 11, 2025. Gunn later described showing Super/Man to his Superman cast and crew as “one of the great moments” in the journey to making their film, and the doc received a “universally emotional and powerful” reception. He continued “We all felt like a part of something larger than ourselves, and we have Chris and his family and the filmmakers to thank for that.”
Directed by McQueen directors Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story is set to be released on September 21 in the United States as the first film from DC Studios, along with HBO Documentary Films, CNN Films, Passion Pictures, Misfits Entertainment, and Words + Pictures. A Fathom Event, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story will encore on Reeve’s birthday, September 25. Once you choose hope, anything is possible.
