'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Official Trailer Surfs And Stretches Out Of CinemaCon
The footage was officially marked for release in this final stretch
Guess it was pretty obvious from the description of the CinemaCon footage that what the exhibitors were seeing of Marvel Studios’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps would be the official trailer from all the different described scenarios that had to flow somehow. And now the studio has made that trailer public, releasing it two weeks later. The film stars starring Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.
The trailer opens up at The Ted Gilbert Show, heavily inspired by The Ed Sullivan Show and befitting the ‘60s era aesthetic of the world. It is here where Gilbert, played by Mark Gatiss, recounts them getting their powers, the outer space adventure, getting hit by cosmic rays, changing them forever in most fantastic of ways. However, unlike how I imagined it, the stage lights are down bar a few spotlights, and the team themselves aren’t onstage for such until they’re introduced, standing in costume. Not even a couch to be found, as far as we can see. Their popularity with the public is showcased too, with the cheering children wanting Ben to lift a car for their amusement. And Ben gets joy out of it too. The children, the nurses, and the firefighters all show their gratitude. Reed and Sue show up late for dinner, earning a light scolding by Johnny, but it turns out, as long suspected, Sue is pregnant, so she’s that late. Johnny heaps congratulations and praise on his sister as he kids around with Reed about the dad he’ll be. Ben and Johnny will be the best uncles ever as Sue assures Reed that nothing will change. Cue the explosions and the arrival of Julia Garner’s Shalla-Bal Silver Surfer, as in all her gleaming, metallic glory, she declares “Your planet is now marked for death”. Johnny flames on and chases after her, only to be shaken off board. Danger is approaching, uncertainty is rampant, even in front of the baby’s crib. But it has to be them, as their powers are on display, even Reed’s for the first time. After the title, Galactus’s boots trudge through the city.
