'The Marvels' Teaser Trailer Sees Kamala Khan Flerken Around In Carol Danvers’s Place
The third and final Marvel Studios film of the year releases in November
It’s time to smile again. Marvel Studios released the first trailer for The Marvels, the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel which progresses the character arc for Monica Rambeau (last seen in WandaVision) and is a direct follow-up to last year’s Ms. Marvel series with Kamala Khan. It was formally played on Tuesday morning during Good Morning America.
The teaser trailer did get its teaser featuring a cosmic anomaly, and audio "from space" teasing the disappearance of Rambeau, played by Teyonah Parris.
As the teaser trailer shows, of course, it turns out she’s fine. For the most part. She’s just doing work for Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson who seems to still be or be back aboard the Skrull ship he was stationed on at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. She approaches a mysterious field in space called the “jump point perimeter” and a single touch repels her quite far. When she’s brought back to the station, it isn’t actually her. It’s Kamala Khan. While she is initially panicked, she is overcome with excitement at the sight of Fury and the prospect of it being an “Avengers test”. It then cuts to Monica crash landing on a moon with some sort of population aggressive toward its perceived invader. As she activates her powers, it’s at the same time as the final scene of Ms. Marvel, when Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, played by Brie Larson, is transported into Kamala’s bedroom, so Monica disappears too. Once Rambeau and Fury reconvene, they go to the Khan household. The Marvels’ powers are entangled, as Monica can now manipulate light energy. Kamala demonstrates her powers, causing another switch that brings her to Goose’s side, and she gets to fangirl out once again. Lots of action ensues, even a Bollywood-style dance as the not-a-team wards off enemies.
Cast-wise, they are rejoined by Saagar Shaikh as Aamir Khan, Kamala’s older brother, Zenobia Shroff as Kamala’s mother Muneeba, and Mohan Kapur as Kamala’s father Yusuf, while Zawe Ashton joins as a villain. Park Seo-joon’s role, while seen in the trailer, isn’t quite made clear.
The Marvels is scheduled to be released on November 10, 2023, having been prior scheduled for July 28, 2023 and July 29, 2022 before it, while also occupying the dates that ultimately went to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Thor: Love and Thunder along the way.
I will note that I’d been holding onto that thumbnail since the final date change, which came with the poster reveal. It was rejected for revealing the poster which had a whole other character in it not visible there. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta and partially written by her, as well as Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells.
