48th Super Sentai Series 'Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger' Officially Announced
A first look image at the Red, Blue, and Pink Rangers has also been released with a premiere date
Power Rangers is heading into a period of dormancy as it awaits its reboot, but over in Japan, the Super Sentai franchise it was born from keeps on trucking with its 48th iteration. That series, Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger, was announced Thursday by Toei.
Trademark listings were found for the show’s title in September, and the official announcement brought with it a “Coming Boon” poster that features a first look at the Red, Blue and Pink Rangers, BoonRed, BoonBlue and BoonPink. Three-Ranger (starting) teams date back to the 1981 Sentai Taiyo Sentai Sun Vulcan, and its usage for Ninpu Sentai Hurricanger meant Power Rangers Ninja Storm would be the first Power Rangers season to adopt it. Most occurrences like those two would have Yellow Rangers rather than Pink, however Power Rangers’s last team build, the Dino Fury team began with a Red-Blue-Pink formation of just Zayto, Ollie and Amelia for its first three episodes before Javi and Izzy join. The theme is cars and “creation”, which might mean an emphasis on building, manufacturing and assembly than just…driving like Gekisou Sentai Carranger (which was the basis of Power Rangers Turbo) . The weapons are cars too.
BoonRed is upbeat and has a big heart. He’s able to see the importance in everything, with a strong intuition and is a quick decision maker. BoonBlue has a cool streak that he might maintain when faced with bigger hurdles? Wish the browser translator was more of a help there. BoonPink sets the mood, is curious and always ready for action. Their morpher, the Boonboom Changer looks like a speedometer, while the main weapon, well I think it being a “handle” is another translation snafu.
While no cast information is available yet, Boonboomger will be (largely?) written by Atsuhiro Tomioka, who has over 200 episodes of Pokémon under his belt, including the very first, as well as Ash’s biggest victory and his big exit. He’s also been writing for the Battle Spirits and Inazuma Eleven series. It will be directed by Shojiro Nakazawa, known for their special effects work in 2021’s Sentai Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger and Kamen Rider Geats, while the action director is Jun Watanabe, and Hiroshi Futada is the special effects director. The coming boon Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger premieres on March 3, 2024 on TV Asahi, continuing the premiere weekend position the franchise has had since Mashin Sentai Kiramager, the first iteration to air in Japan’s Reiwa era in 2020.
