Amy Jo Johnson Gives An Update On Her ‘Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers’ Comic Prelude
It's quite the Ptera-tackle
In April, original Mighty Morphin Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson announced she was co-writing a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic series for Boom! Studios. By the end of the month, an eight-page prelude story was unlocked, to be included in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Special. Now the actress is sharing something of a preview on her socials.
Johnson posted on Instagram “No spoilers! Just overly excited to be working with [Francesco Mortarino] on our Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers Anniversary Special Short Story! Got our page layouts yesterday. And it’s looking incredible! Can’t wait to share this teaser with you all”. She reminds that the prelude “sets up our MMPR comic book series coming out early 2024.” She describes the series as a “what if of sorts”, which reinforces the belief that the included story about Tommy Oliver is hers.
Johnson played Kimberly Hart, the original Pink Ranger for all but eight episodes of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, to which she last returned to the role in Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. She made a cameo in the reboot film Power Rangers as a civilian onlooker, her most recent appearance in the franchise. She would go on to be a series regular in Felicity and Flashpoint while starring in Susie Q and Perfect Body. She turned to directing about a decade ago when she also started making convention appearances. She’s also started directing television, with an episode of Superman & Lois.
While she did not partake in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once And Always, the TV series’s part in the 30th anniversary celebrations, it is the comic series and its prelude through which Johnson reflect backs on her time as a Ranger. She calls her comic series a love letter to her fans and the franchise that gave her her start. The other stories set to be included in the comic special are about Alpha 5 struggling to find his new purpose, a spotlight for Ernie and his juice bar at the Angel Grove Community Center, a return to Ranger Academy after being introduced in the 2023 Free Comic Book Day Special, and another Tommy-starring story taking a closer look at his marriage to Kat Hillard, the second Pink Ranger. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Special will be released on August 30.
