New Details Revealed For Boom! Studios' 'Mighty Morphin Power Rangers 30th Anniversary Comic Special'
Fresh off 'Once And Always', we know Amy Jo Johnson has a story to tell, but what else is there? Find out
We are just about a month since the Power Rangers 30th anniversary special Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers: Once and Always premiered on Netflix, but the franchise has staked its claims in comic books since 2016 at Boom! Studios. So like for the 25th in 2018, the comics are not only doing a huge event, this time Darkest Hour, but a 30th-anniversary anthology with five all-new stories that will pay tribute to the franchise’s legacy.
As previously reported, the original Mighty Morphin’ Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson and her partner Matt Hotson are working on a story together, both writing. The other contributing writers are: current main comics writer Melissa Flores, Ryan Parrott, who wrote Go Go Power Rangers, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers issues 40-55, the first 16 issues of Mighty Morphin and all of Power Rangers, as well as both Power Rangers/TMNT miniseries, Maria Ingrande Mora, and Mat Groom, who wrote six issues of Mighty Morphin.
The stories we have to look forward to are: Alpha 5 struggling to find his new purpose, a spotlight for Ernie and his juice bar at the Angel Grove Community Center, a "What If?" story (reportedly Johnson and Hotson’s) taking place in a new alternate universe focused on Green Ranger Tommy Oliver, a return to Ranger Academy after being introduced in the 2023 Free Comic Book Day Special, and another Tommy-starring story taking a closer look at his marriage to Kat Hillard, the second Pink Ranger. The main cover is by series regular Dan Mora, with variants by Rian Gonzales, Jamal Campbell, and returnees Bon Bernardo, Miguel Mercado, and Goñi Montes. The new stories amount to 40 pages of action-packed material, with 24 pages of classic stories as well that are said to be delightful.
BOOM! Studios editor Allyson Gronowitz is highly anticipating the special, saying there’s something in it for all kinds of Power Rangers fans.
"This is without a doubt an oversized celebration of Power Rangers for fans, writers, and artists who are true fans themselves," said Gronowitz. "It is an enormous cross-section of Power Rangers storytelling with amazing brand-new stories, and a couple of fan-favorite older ones. If you grew up with any season of Power Rangers, this is our gift to you!"
Of course, there’s still more to come onscreen when the Dino Fury team chases Zedd into space on Power Rangers Cosmic Fury, coming this fall to Netflix.
