'Babylon 5: The Road Home' Movie Gets Trailer And Premiere Date
I was there at the dawn of the third age. The direct-to-video animated movie age
It has only been a few days since creator J. Michael Straczynski was able to share the first images from his upcoming Babylon 5 animated movie Babylon 5: The Road Home, which he wrote and executive produced. On Wednesday, he revealed that “release date, rating, extras, how to get it and THE FULL LENGTH TRAILER” would be released the very next day. After having watched it several times himself, stated a noon Eastern release time, and that’s exactly what happened.
It’s two years after the end of the Shadow War, and Interstellar Alliance President John Sheridan, voiced by the returning Bruce Boxleitner, is headed to Minbar for what appears to be the activation event of a generator on the planet. However, it’s powered by tachyons. When the machine turns on, it dislodges Sheridan from time, making him unstuck and bouncing between timelines, universes, and realities, not unlike the grim fate of Colin Mallory on Sliders, played by Charlie O’Connell. When Sheridan encounters Dr. Stephen Franklin, now voiced by Phil LaMarr, he even uses the term “sliding” to describe what will happen to Sheridan if he doesn’t return to his proper place in the multiverse on Babylon 5, he never will. It seems his most stable stay will be in a universe where Earth forces lost the Shadow War, meaning a lot more death and destruction, to which Sheridan leads a stand. He even apparently makes it back but is forced out again, tearing him away from his wife Delenn, and into a void where he is sure to discover “cosmic new revelations about the history, purpose, and meaning of the Universe”, according to the logline.
Joining Boxleitner and LaMarr are six other returnees reprising their roles: Bill Mumy as Lennier, Claudia Christian as Susan Ivanova, Peter Jurasik as Londo Mollari, Tracy Scoggins as Elizabeth Lochley, and Patricia Tallman as Lyta Alexander. Delenn, now voiced by Rebecca Riedy, was played by Mira Furlan, who died in 2021. Dr. Franklin was originally played by Richard Biggs, who died in 2004. Paul Guyet voices Zathras (who no one listens to) and the previous captain of the station Jeffrey Sinclair, the latter specifically likely to be a dimensional or alternate timeline counterpart. The respective roles originated by Tim Choate and Michael O’Hare, passing in 2004 and 2012 respectively. Anthony Hansen voices Michael Garibaldi, the station’s chief of security originally played by Jerry Doyle, who died in 2016. Andrew Morgado voices Narn ambassador G’Kar, originally played by Andreas Katsulas, who died in 2006. At the end of the trailer, he’s seen in quite a different color palette than he’s known for, meaning he might be the ally Sheridan needs to get home, like Thomas Wayne Batman in the original Flashpoint storyline in DC Comics.
The Babylon 5 series ran on the Primetime Entertainment Network (PTEN) for four seasons before the network collapsed. It was rescued by TNT for the fifth, each running 22 episodes for 110 total from 1993-1998. Matt Peters, who directed Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons, directs this, and Rick Morales is supervising producer.
Babylon 5: The Road Home has been set for an August 15 digital and physical release in 4K Ultra HD, and Blu-ray from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment. They’re also releasing the complete series of Metalocalypse that day.
