Welcome to Hell in Mattel. On Warner Bros.’s 100th anniversary, the studio released the second teaser trailer for their upcoming Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
There’s an overhead of Barbieland before we’re treated to Barbie’s strut as she heads to the beach. She’s greeted by Ken and it becomes clear who a good chunk of the actors in the cast are playing: They’re Barbie and Ken variants. Issa Rae is President Barbie! Alexandra Shipp is Writer Barbie! Dua Lipa is Mermaid Barbie! Even Kate McKinnon is Gymnast Barbie! Ncuti Gatwa is a Ken! Simu Liu is a Ken! Even Kingsley Ben-Adir is a Ken! It also becomes clear main Ken and Barbie aren’t quite the brightest but it’s very charming. There are beach battles with much of the populace and… greaser battles focused on Gos-Ken and Liu-Ken? Barbie takes multiple trips in her Corvette, and it apparently includes a trip to the Real World with main Ken (to her surprise) to meet with the Mattel CEO played by Will Ferrell. Honestly feels like it combines the Dad from The Lego Movie with the President Business character he inspired.
The film also stars Nicola Coughlan, Hari Nef, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Ritu Arya, America Ferrera, Emerald Fennell, Ana Cruz Kayne, Scott Evans, Jamie Demetriou, Connor Swindells, and Ariana Greenblatt, with Helen Mirren as the Narrator. Written by Noah Baumbach and director Greta Gerwig, Barbie will be ready to beach you off on July 21 against Christopher Nolan’s historical drama Oppenheimer for Universal, and Lionsgate’s horror-thriller Cobweb.
