Warner Bros. And DC Studios Have Released The First Trailer For 'Blue Beetle'
I wish Jaime, I wish Jai-might have this scarab I see tonight
Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Blue Beetle, about the DC superhero mantle held by Jaime Reyes. It is directed by Angel Manuel Soto and was moved from an HBO Max release even before the Warner Bros. Discovery regime did the same for House Party, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, and Evil Dead Rise.
Xolo Maridueña, best known for his role on Cobra Kai, stars as Jaime, who recently graduated college and returns home optimistic with aspirations for his future. However, home is not quite as he left it. As he searches for purpose, his sister brings him (in a Big Belly Burger carton) an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, it painfully transforms him with quite the body horror, but it gives him an armored and powered suit, turning him into the Blue Beetle.
The film also features comedian George Lopez as Jaime’s very supportive Uncle Rudy, Belissa Escobedo as Jaime’s sister, Milagro, Adriana Barraza as Jaime’s Nana, Damían Alcázar as his father, Elpidia Carrillo as his mother, Raoul Max Trujillo as Carapax, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, who believes the Scarab belongs to her, and Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord. It’s also finally known who Harvey Guillen of What We Do In The Shadows will be playing, and it’s the character of Dr. Sanchez.
Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer wrote the film. John Rickard and Zev Foreman are producing, and Walter Hamada, who was running DC Films for much of the film’s production Galen Vaisman and Garrett Grant serve as executive producers.
While the DC Extended Universe it was born in may be coming to an end, this iteration of Jaime reportedly has a chance to grow, as according to Deadline he will be incorporated into the DCU, well it says “the character” which is kind of vague, but they point to the developing Booster Gold series (his best friend in the comics) as evidence. The trailer can be watched below. Blue Beetle is set to be released on August 18, 2023.
