Checkered Past Will Take Adult Swim To 5 PM With Two-Hour Block
The block premieres on August 28
Back in June, Adult Swim announced its previously-announced expansion to 6 PM would be a branded block called Checkered Past, featuring Cartoon Network classics. However, at around San Diego Comic-Con, and then confirmed during the Adult Swim Festival, Checkered Past would actually be starting at 5 PM.
This means that the four shows discussed to be part of the block, Dexter’s Laboratory, Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, and Courage the Cowardly Dog, would in fact not be alternating but instead airing all together. Specifically, For the foreseeable future it’ll just be these shows airing in that order from 5-7 PM.
After all, they’re the only shows in the promos. They’re starting with somewhere around their first episodes, Dexter’s Lab’s is with “Dexter's Rival” / “Simion” / “Old Man Dexter”, and Ed, Edd, n’ Eddy’s “The Ed-Touchables” / “Nagged to Ed”. Billy and Mandy will begin with their first episodes dislodged from Evil Con Carne, “Toadblatt's School of Sorcery” / “Educating Grim” / “It's Hokey Mon!” while Courage begins with episode 2. Unlike with previous nostalgia blocks however, it seems the block is on shuffle mode from there, with highly-regarded episodes like “The Big Cheese” and “Keeper of the Reaper” showing up at some point during the rest of the week.
The block is still set for Saturdays as well, featuring the more family-friendly Adult Swim originals Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and My Adventures with Superman. If that’s still the case, it’s going to need more support with only 20 episodes combined and four slots to work with. In addition, the expansion means that Adult Swim now has most of the territory of Cartoon Network’s channel space at 13 hours except . This has also pushed CN’s new episode premieres in September exclusively to Saturday mornings. Checkered Past premieres on August 28.
