Chiwetel Ejiofor Crosses Universes, Joins 'Venom 3'
While there's minuscule chance he's back as Baron Mordo, he's still booked for the Sony Marvel film
Chiwetel Ejiofor is staying in the superhero movie realm. The The Man Who Fell To Earth actor has signed on for Sony and Marvel’s Venom 3.
Character details are as unknown as the plot still is at this point but of course, Tom Hardy returns as both Eddie Brock and the voice of the Venom symbiote. Juno Temple was previously reported to have joined the cast. Kelly Marcel will be directing the film in her directorial debut. She also wrote the screenplay having developed the film’s story with Hardy. Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, and Hutch Parker are also producing. Sony has yet to comment on either non-Hardy casting.
2018’s Venom was directed by Ruben Fleischer. It was the first of Sony’s films centered on Spider-Man villains without, for the most part, actually using Spider-Man, a character positioned in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which Sony’s universe is currently separate from. The first sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, was released in 2021 and directed by Andy Serkis. The two films thus far have earned a combined $1.36 billion. Morbius, starring Jared Leto about the character Dr. Michael Morbius, known as the Living Vampire in the comics, was released in April 2022. Films centered on Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, and El Muerto are coming on October 6, 2023, January 12, 2024, and February 16, 2024, respectively. Venom 3 still has no release date.
Ejiofor meanwhile does come from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Baron Karl Mordo in Doctor Strange and his Earth-838 counterpart in last year’s sequel Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. He of course is an Academy Award nominee, for Best Actor for his role as Solomon Northup in 12 Years A Slave. His other film credits include Love, Actually, the original version of Kinky Boots, Children of Men, 2012, The Martian, the CG The Lion King, and The Old Guard, a sequel for which he is set to return. He just starred in The Pod Generation with Emilia Clarke, which premiered at Sundance, and has Rob Peace up next, which he stars in and directs.
