'Disenchantment' Is Ending After Five Seasons On Netflix
Bean, Luci and Elfo have one last adventure in Dreamland ahead of them in September
It was just eight days ago that Futurama returned on Hulu. That meant creator Matt Groening had three active shows: The Simpsons, heading into its 35th season at Fox, the aforementioned just-revived Futurama, and Disenchantment, which premiered on Netflix in 2018. As it turns out, the coexistence will be very short-lived, as the streamer announced that the series will be ending with its fifth part very soon.
Disenchantment’s fifth and final part, consisting of 10 episodes, will be premiering September 1. The series originally began with a 20-episode order before being renewed for a second batch of 20. Netflix typically split the orders and billed each batch half a “part,” a tactic employed to avoid standard pay raises for cast and crew. Each previous part was released n August 2018, September 2019, January 2021 and February 2022 respectively. In fact, the Part 4 release date, February 9, was the same day Hulu announced Futurama’s revival, which premiered on July 24 of this year.
According to the final logline: “To save Dreamland from Queen Dagmar’s wicked rule, Bean must vanquish her mother and outrun a prophecy that foretells she will kill someone she loves. The stakes are as high as ever as our heroes face Satan, a headless corpse, an evil scientist and most terrifying of all — their true destiny.” The series stars Abbi Jacobson as Princess Bean, Eric André as Luci, Nat Faxon as Elfo, Matt Berry as Prince Merkimer, Sharon Horgan as Queen Dagmar, and Futurama regulars John DiMaggio as King Zog, Tress MacNeille as Queen Oona, Maurice LaMarche as Odval. Other cast includes Richard Ayoade, Noel Fielding, Meredith Hagner, David Herman, Lucy Montgomery, and Billy West.
The teaser, which can be watched below, features a lot of recap as well as action, the devil, and moments between Bean and Mora, her mermaid girlfriend. Disenchantment endeth on Friday, September 1 on Netflix. While The Simpsons will still be on summer break and begin its season a few weeks after, the final Disenchantment episodes will drop between Futurama episodes “I Know What You Did Next Xmas” and “Rage Against the Vaccine”. Josh Weinstein serves as showrunner, having developed the series with Groening.
