Disney+’s 'Malcolm In The Middle' Revival Has Wrapped Filming
Life is unfair again, but it also is feeling right for the series’s stars
Disney+’s upcoming four episode revival of the Fox sitcom Malcolm in the Middle has wrapped filming, and it seems to have done wonders for reigniting star Frankie Muniz’s acting passions.
The actor, who in 2021 saw his racecar driving pursuits really pick up including a fourth place finish in the ARCA Menards Series standings in 2023 and a full time presence in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, made the wrap announcement on his socials Friday, revealing he was reminded “how much I truly love being an actor.” He wrote “Just wrapped filming the Malcolm in the Middle reboot, and man, I’m still reeling. This experience was straight-up incredible—like stepping back into Malcolm’s wild world but with all the love and chaos cranked to 11. Reuniting with the cast, getting to know some new characters, laughing till it hurt, and making new memories on set felt like a dream I didn’t want to wake up from. It went by so fast, like a blur of perfect moments. I wish it could go on forever.”
'Malcolm In The Middle' Revival Gets Malcolm’s Girlfriend, Daughter, Francis, Reese, New Dewey, And Younger Siblings
Yes, there’s no maybe I don’t know, but the cast for Disney Branded Television’s 4-episode Malcolm in the Middle revival for Disney+ is being built quite well. Already with Frankie Muniz’s Malcolm, Jane Kaczmarek’s Lois, and Bryan Cranston’s Hal from the original 2000-2006
He continued well beyond Twitter’s character limit, writing “I’m so happy to have gotten the chance to relive being on this show with a greater appreciation of what we were making knowing how many people around the world truly love Malcolm and his family. Another big thing I am taking away from this experience is how much I truly love being an actor. I never officially felt like that label fit me, but now I wear that label proudly and hope to do so much more of it in the future. I am so sad to have to say goodbye to my MITM crew, I love each and everyone of you. And PS: Life’s Still Unfair,” he added, referencing the show’s “Boss Of Me” theme song from They Might Be Giants. “I had so many incredible pictures of all the cast I wanted to post but Disney won’t let me…. So imagine a picture of all of us together, having the time of our lives!” The photos Muniz did share were of the clapboard and of himself. The photo I’m using as header, featuring him back with TV parents Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, who play Hal and Lois, comes from the start of filming that he captioned “Always good to have Mom and Dad around!!” Muniz later described that he hadn’t been home to wife Paige and son Mauz since March 8.
As it turns out, he wasn’t the only one reflecting, as Justin Berfield, who reprises his role as next oldest brother Reese, was also reflecting, saying “It was so amazing catching up with old friends and met some amazing new ones! We’re so lucky that we got to come back to these characters after 20 years and see where they’ve been. I had so much fun getting to go back to my old life as an actor…now it’s back to carpools and diapers! Can’t wait for you all to see the show!”
The episodes will also star Christopher Masterson back as Francis, Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over from Erik Per Sullivan as Dewey, Anthony Timpano and Vaughan Murrae as youngest siblings Jamie, who was born at the end of season 4, and Kelly, a series finale pregnancy discovery. Who else is in the siblings’ lives hasn’t been announced, but Malcolm has a daughter named Leah, played by Keeley Karsten, and Kiana Madeira as Tristan, “Malcolm’s charming and opinionated girlfriend who – by any rational standard – is way out of his league.” The logline reads “Malcolm and his daughter are drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal and Lois demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party.”
Series creator Linwood Boomer returns as writer and executive producer. Cranston, Tracy Katsky (KatCo), Gail Berman and New Regency’s Arnon Milchan, Yariv Milchan and Natalie Lehmann are executive producers. Ken Kwapis, a frequent director of original series episodes directed all four of the new ones and executive produce. Jimmy Simons and Laura Delahaye are co-executive producers. A premiere date hasn’t been announced.
