'Doctor Who' Celebrates Revival’s 20th Anniversary With Special 'Unleashed' Episode
The hourlong episode is set to air in June on BBC Three, iPlayer, and Wales, as well as YouTube
In an 8-episode second season of Doctor Who on Disney+ that sought to bring Belinda Chandra home, and having just had three 60th anniversary specials just a year and a half ago, it would be a lot to fit in another anniversary special for the 20th anniversary of the show’s revival. March 26, 2005 was the night it all kicked off with the premiere of “Rose”, with Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor and Billie Piper as companion Rose Tyler. While scripted wasn’t quite prepared for such celebration, there will still be one. Doctor Who: Unleashed, the series’s behind-the-scenes companion show hosted by Steffan Powell, will be airing a special hourlong episode for the occasion next month.
Airing on BBC Three, BBC iPlayer and BBC Wales, with its international YouTube release sure to be confirmed soon, he will be joined by many cast and crew who helped carry the show all this way. That includes star Doctors David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, and Ncuti Gatwa, companions Piper, Pearl Mackie, Mandip Gill, and Varada Sethu, and all three showrunners the revival has had: Russell T. Davies, Steven Moffat and Chris Chibnall. He will also be interviewing crew members gleaning whatever new secrets he can.

Davies revealed the existence of the episode to io9 last month, admitting it hadn’t been on his mind and came last minute, continuing “I’m very much aware how on Disney+ worldwide, going to some territories that have never had Doctor Who before. There are some people watching this to who Ncuti is the Doctor—the number one, their Doctor, and so you’ve got to bear that in mind. That’s always been the case, for many years, to look for that new audience. So I actually thought it’d be a bit backward, be a bit heavy handed to [acknowledge]… and now we’re here and I’m kind of slightly kicking myself, because everyone seems to be full of joy about it!” That joy ultimately convinced Davies to produce some sort of celebration after all. “It’s coming out late, because I was the one saying ‘let’s not do anything!’,” Davies laughed. “And then quite late in the day I changed my mind! ‘Everyone’s talking about it, let’s do something!’. So we are.”
Once the special was officially announced Davies remarked: “After the season's climactic end, it’s great to celebrate the 20 years that led us here. I hope this is a party for faithful viewers, with a galaxy of stars, Doctors, companions, Billie Piper reunited with David Tennant, and the making of our first ever Dalek!” Powell adds “What a joy to be giving the Unleashed treatment to 20 years’ worth of Doctor Who history. To see the lasting impact the show has had on those who helped bring the magic to screen has been a privilege, and a reminder of just how much the show means to so many.”
Tennant’s reunion with Piper was probably the biggest photo of the press release, and can be seen below before the episode’s June premiere.
