'Doctor Who' Confirms Freddie Fox As Guest Star
The case of the disappearing guest star is disappeared no more!
Guess they didn’t want to blow their horns too quickly. There are five weeks until Doctor Who returns for its new season on Disney+ and the BBC, and just because they released a second trailer doesn’t mean there wasn’t more to reveal. Especially when a certain someone kind of already was. Freddie Fox, an actor currently known for House of the Dragon, has been confirmed as a guest star in one of the upcoming season’s episodes.
Although it’s not quite a confirmation, as it wasn’t quite a rumor or leak that fans got wind of. Fox was included on the guest cast list featured in Disney’s fact sheet from when the season premiere date and general time slot was announced. He was the only previously unannounced name on the guest cast list. Quickly removed, and absent from the subsequent second trailer, it’s more that his presence has been acknowledged for the first time. He is described as “playing a fearsome villain from another planet” who, cross-referencing the second trailer, uses minions that are seen in said trailer.
'Doctor Who' Hits A Cool High Note With New Season Trailer
It’s the Doctor and the nurse traveling the universe. The BBC released the second trailer for the upcoming season of Doctor Who on Sunday, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor and Varada Sethu as new companion Belinda Chandra. The trailer for the season premiering April 12 on BBC and
Fox’s first onscreen credit came in 2009, and has since appeared in roles on shows familiar to American audiences such as The Gentlemen, The Crown, The Great, Slow Horses, and most notably as Ser Gwayne Hightower in House of the Dragon. He’s also had experience working with current and two-time Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies as the character Freddie Baxter on his Channel 4 dramas Cucumber and Banana. On stage, Fox has earned a Laurence Oliver nomination for his role as Tristan Tzara in the revival of Travesties at the Apollo Theatre.
His statement reads “I had the most amazing time making this show and feel honoured to have been asked to be a part of Russell's crazy, bonkers, beautiful vision. Added to which, sharing space with the iconic Doctor that is Ncuti Gatwa was special beyond imagining. If audiences enjoy watching it half as much as I did making it, televisions are on course to explode right across the world!”
Davies put out his own statement: “It’s been 10 years since I worked with Freddie on Cucumber, and this is a great way to celebrate the anniversary. He’s the most spectacular actor, and he comes to Doctor Who with fury, venom, cunning and a beautiful set of horns. Doctor beware!”
The new season features Gatwa as the Doctor with Varada Sethu as new companion Belinda Chandra as a mysterious force get in the way of bringing her home, so instead they face great dangers, ferocious enemies and wilder terrors than ever before. It will feature appearances by last season’s companion Ruby Sunday, played by Millie Gibson, still given star billing. Michelle Greenidge will return as her adoptive mother Carla Sunday, but still no word on Angela Wynter as her mother Cherry Sunday or even Faye McKeever as Ruby’s birth mother, Louise Miller. This season’s other new guest stars include Alan Cumming as Mr. Ring-a-Ding, as well as Jonah Hauer-King as Ruby’s friend and Archie Panjabi as a villain like Fox, while Rose Ayling-Ellis and Christopher Chung as Cassio are reportedly appearing in the same episode titled “Five Miles Deep”. The Interstellar Song Contest featured in an episode this season will be co-hosted by Rylan as himself and an avian alien played by Julie Dray. Other guest stars with unidentified include Caoilfhionn Dunne, Evelyn Miller, Ariyon Bakare. Returning are Anita Dobson as Mrs. Flood, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Alexander Devrient as Colonel Ibrahim, Ruth Madeley as Shirley Anne Bingham, Bonnie Langford as Mel Bush, and Susan Twist as Susan Triad.
Doctor Who’s new season premieres Friday April 12, with an 8 AM iPlayer posting that amounts to a 3 AM Eastern / Midnight Pacific on Disney+ stateside. See the first-look image below.
